To the OP, I'd keep bugging the dealer about it. I had the same ticking sound in my Z4 and it was finally resolved when they replaced the lifters. I'll be keeping this Z for a long time. I expect it to last as long as my Civic and Jeep Cherokee both over 100k. This is a BMW. I expect to get what I paid for. To be told to just ignore the sound and just drive it hard is unacceptable. If it is making a ticking sound due to metal hitting metal from not enough oil getting in, then to me, this is defective and should be repaired. Just because this problem was mainly seen in 6 cylinder engines doesn't mean the problem doesn't potentially exist in a 4 cylinder.

SORRY TO DRAG UP AN OLD THREAD!!

Had my 320i for around 6 months now, only has 17000 on the clock and this is the issue that i am having. When i turn the car on from say sitting over night, when the car's revs are between around 1.5k-2.5 it sounds like a tractor/diesel. It can be heard even when the car is just revved. Which can be seen at around the 30 second mark. I was worried it may be a loose bearing or something but it actually disappears after driving the car for around 5 mins i.e when the engine started to get hot. Really starting to get worried and not exactly sure what bmw are gonna do if they actually can do there jobs and accept that there is an issue here. I will be showing them the video because no doubt they wont find fault when they take it out.

Check the alternator pulley / one way clutch, these always fail and make a lot of noise

One of the pulleys kind of front and center of the engine seems to have more movement than it should. But its just strange that the sound goes away when the engine is warmed up? It's a loud old noise as well, literally like a tractor.

Yep that's what happens with the alternator drive pulley fault, its a common issue. The knocking does get less when everything warms up.
We change them all the time, about $150-$200 all up

Ah okay, i will take it in and mention that. It is a 12 plate so has loads of warranty left. So i wont have them trying to make me pay. They will have to sort it out! Should it be okay for the time being until i have some time to take it in?

Hi all,

I bought my 3rd bmw few weeks ago - 318i n43 engine, 2010 reg and just wondering why this petrol engine makes so much noise. I had two diesels before - e90 318d 2008 and e46 320d 2004 so I'm used to rattle but this noise make me worried. Is this chain rattle or something else?

Thanks!

Hi, i thought i would update my situation to help enlighten anyone else. The car had a full alternator system replacement to no avail with the noise. It went back again for a full week in which the problem was found and solved. Timing chain tensioner was malfunctioning. If you hear the noise, get it checked because if it goes wrong big time then it would likely be a new engine.

Hi
Do you heard this sound on the intake side more on the back of the engine?
I have similar noise but I hear it at the back of the valve cover at intake side. I've noticed that a part of my noise is breathing valve but today noticed that this is not only source.
