Not the easiest car to swap out an ECU on in a public place, as you need the bonent fully open for a few minutes.

The EVO is pretty soft target in comparison, the ECU is in the footwell same as many Hondas etc.

Grab a used ECU for that year of car, program a key for it and rock up and swap them - drive home.

What a crock of shit! I've lived in Birmingham for a year now and there are no end of problems in this place.

I hope you get some better luck with a replacement car from your insurers.

Thanks MEGA and to everyone for their comments. I have read Doc Matt's post and can say it was very distressing, especially as it's still continuing. Found a few threads in different sites about cars being stolen from this car park and trying to collect info, models, dates, etc. Not found one with a status 'recovered' - not that I want it back now.

Some peeps been asking about how the Audi had stolen plates but got out. So I hope this explains it:

Thieves in the Audi, (probably stolen) enters car park. Don't know if it's already got VW plates or steals them in the car park. Owner of the VW has no knowledge that his plates or car has been stolen and hasn't notified police. Thieves are busy on my car and start the engine.

Minimum stay in Long Stay 1 carpark is 2 days, guess they don't mind paying the extra. ANPR checks plates on Audi which has paid and everything is legit so exit barrier allows them out.

Thieves in my M3 tailgate Audi out through the exit barrier. ANPR recognises my M3 came in 2 days ago, but nobody has paid for the 2 days it was parked there and I've still got the parking ticket.

I don't think it would have made any difference if I prebook and paid upfront on a card and got a booking reference or paid the daily rate upon leaving the car park.

The ANPR system would flag up and alert the operator, this registration plate is prebooked for these dates and not due to go out until such a date. But this is after the event. Brain drained at the moment, so could be missing the obvious, but I can't see why a prebooked vehicle couldn't be stolen in exactly the same manner as mine.

Seeing as a few cars have been targeted in this location, surely the police or 'someone' could set a trap....get an M3....lots of coffee and donuts and do a stake-out, wait for the scumbags to arrive, then pounce! job done.

Sounds to me like the security guy who does patrol is tipping the scum off, otherwise how else would they know whithin less than 48 hours (perhaps just lucky) that an M3 was parked up.

Right, so they stole plates from a car in the carpark that had paid. Makes sense.

No worries for the information I just wish I could provide something a little more positive than proof that someone else got stung by the same scam.

Still, this has been going on since early 2008 and STILL bmw do nothing about it or even acknowledge that it is possible? Very worrying.

As others have said on other posts: The issue is that the rf between fob and car is not encrpypted. These should be encrypted with AES512 and the private/public key pairs specifically generated PER CAR, not the same codes for all cars.

Security like this is not difficult to implement. But it would lead to 20mins of manual work per car of someone generating keys and saving them to eprom/ rom on the key so they don't bother.

Sigh.

BMW aught to be strung up about this. Their flat denial is infuriating. I'm not saying it's only BMW: All of the modern cars are at risk from what I've read... So same goes for any other manufacturer who is refusing to own up to the issue as well.

Watchdog anyone?

Dave

I think it is encrypted now in the manner you describe but this isn't how the OPs car was stolen anyway. The blaggers turned up after it had been parked and swapped the entire ecu & ews and drove off with a key they had for that set up - they didn't catch the signals and decode them.

As has been said, it should be that if the ews module is removed it is then disabled unless activated by a dealer.

As already asked by Mega, since you've had the car from new, did you purchase a 3year 'return to invoice' GAP insurance policy?

So they broke in through a window, opened the door, opened the bonnet, silenced the alarm then swapped the ECU?

I'd assumed they'd gained a safe unlock of the car via intercepting a key. But I'd only assumed. Don't think I read it anywhere. It just seems to be the method.

Sad to know this mate...I would say like pls post any pictures of your car if any like any windscreen stickers or any specific tax disc holders were there in your car...a brief description of the looks and all...This will help one of us to help you if we find any suspicious looking cars of the same description...lot of fellow members travel a lot and can keep in mind about your car and also check for any M3s for sale of the same config but different reg marks..

Have seen a friend succeed in the same way for his A4. It had a sticker on his rear wind screen which was a unique shape and was running on a different plate with a for sale paper sticked on...

All the best and happy to help as far as possible...the financial and sentimental loss is tremendous and can understand the situation you are going through and praying for a easy getting out from this problem

You might be right, Dave. I "assumed" that they had popped the bonnet and swapped the ews and then unlocked the car and driven it away.

That's another thing.

They should just introduce a system like clifford callguard or blackjax.

With blackjax you need to enter a 4 digit code every time you drive away and with callguard you get texted whenever the alarm actions. You can then respond to the texts with messages either shut down, siren, start or stop engine. etc.

Had it on my peugeot was a superb solution. Wherever I was if my alarm tripped I knew about it straight away. Had a massive audio install in that car (8-10k) so was worth it's weight in gold for the peace of mind.

But now the manufacturers think they know better than the professional alarm agencies and make it more or less impossible to improve the security with aftermarket systems.

Pleae don't bring it to Watchdogs attention, it will then be a national outcry that BMWs are easily stolen and our insurance will quadruple over night.

One other thing, the cars that are really hard to grab the rf signal from are often stolen by breaking into the house and taking the keys, I would rather mine disappeared from a car park than put my family at risk.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your car being recently stolen from our car park on xx/xx/xx.

Unfortunately, as our car park is attended only in such a way as to ensure we receive the maximum amount of money possible, we have no interest in assisting you with pursuing the thieves, nor can we offer any CCTV footage, as that might prove that we have in any minute way been negligent.

Please accept this 86 page copy of our Terms and Conditions which explains why we are allowed to do this and accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thanks

Yours Sincerely

Not that you really want the car back after something like this has happened, but some basic facts about it beyond that it’s a '2008 M3 coupe' might help, specifically,...

Colour – Exterior and interior
VIN and Reg number
Is it an 08 or 58?… (58 meaning it has the newer SatNav etc)
Manual or DCT?
Wheels (are they the 18's or 19's or after market?)
Interior leather extended?
Sun protection glass?
Carbon roof?
Audio,... eg: Logic7, Individual, after market?
Any distinctive mods,...eg: black grills

etc etc.
