The 6 pot is a much more cultured engine IMHO. That would be my only reason for choosing it.

I'm currently trying to find an E92 LCI 2010 onwards, it has to be an auto with nav. To be honest I'm not bothered which I get either a 325d or a 330d m sport, my point is I can't see a massive differance in price as I'm quite specific in what I want.

If I do get a 325d I'd be mapping it where as a 330d id probably leave standard as I have with my 57 E90 320d.

I was similar to yourself whilst looking for the right car in terms of having a certain spec in mind.

I wanted the following:
Logic 7 or as a min the BMW hi-if option
Nav
Heated leather
6 cylinder diesel
Bluetooth
Usb

In the end I ended up with a 325d with all of the above bar logic 7 but did get the hifi upgrade. I also got electric memory seats as an added bonus. Love the car and very happy with my purchase.

Spent weeks looking for a 330D, but in my budget they were all high mileage dogs. Ended up buying a 325D M Sport, pick it up tomorrow

Good to hear it, you won't regret it. Its a sweet engine. no matter what you hear.. it goes. More torque than an M3 still and that's what counts with these engines not just HP. Also the late 2010 models with the new N57 engine remap the exact figures the 330D achieves as well. So a nice 285 hp and 435 ft lbs. Enjoy!

had my 325d for a while now and certainly don't regret purchasing this over a 330d. It came with everything I wanted on it! The drive is very good, it's no slouch at all.

I also can't find anywhere, what the difference is between my engine and the 330d (mines not an LCI)
There must be a difference, as mine will only map to 330d power, whereas as a 330d, will map to 335d power!

I'm still toying with the idea of a map, but want to explore all avenues (see if I can get anything more from it)

For a given power level you need the appropriate amount of air, and fuel.

The turbocharger is the same, which is a good start. The exhaust is the same and the intercooler is the same. So in air terms theres no issue. The engine can happily flow the same amounts of air as a 330d.

On the fuel side, the 325d does have smaller injectors than the 330. How much smaller those are, and how much of a hinderance that is, i dont know.

What you need is someone who knows these cars properly and will write you a custom map, rather than going to "superchip" or whatever and getting a generic stage 1 tune, that way they will be able to maximise what you have, rather than just playing it safe and going for a % over stock as they usually do. I suspect if you want to match the ~300hp a 330d can achieve with dpf-delete etc then you'll definately need 330d injectors to match.

I've had both and my previous 325d lci auto was almost identical to my current 330d lci auto in real world day to day driving. I do a lot of miles and was averaging 40.6 in 325 to 39.8 in 330. insurance is approx £40 more now which over 12 months is basically nothing.

A good spec 330 will retain better value in long run but 325 is cheaper to buy.

I would say go for the right spec and colour for you and you'll be happy with either engine. personally I'd rather buy a standard 330 than a mapped 325 - people can be hesitant to buy a mapped car so might not help when you come to sell but if you plan to keep it for years who cares.

Bringing a great thread back from the dead......

I'm looking to get my 2010 LCI 325d mapped and have been stalking forums / RealOEM to try and figure out what actually is the difference between the N57 325d and N57 330d....

RealOEM suggests they use identical turbos / fuelling systems, so all I can assume is that it really is just a de-tune on the 325d.

As for brakes, RealOEM also suggests they both use 330x24 (34116854999) discs on the front, yet the 330d has an option of 348x30 (34116855000) discs.

What then confuses me is that both the 325d and 330d use a 336x22 (34216855004) rear disc? I really wouldn't think that it would have a larger disc on the rear since most of the breaking force comes from the front? (Please correct me if I'm wrong)...

So, what is the likelihood that I'll get close to 300bhp with a tune?

Answers on a postcard.......

The LCI 325d and 330dLCI engines are identical in every way...it is just the engine software controlling/limiting the power.

Wrong.

The LCI 325d only got the 'identical' (albeit de-tuned) N57 330d engine from the end of Feb 2010. Prior to that it had the 'older' M57.

Therefore there are plenty of LCI 325d's out there with the 'older' M57 engine, one of which is mine (a Feb 2010 build).

Also, the M57 engine found in the pre-LCI 330d is not identical to the M57 engine fitted in pre Feb 2010 325d's. The injectors are from a 318d!

To map a 325d M57 engine in an identical manner to a 330d M57 engine requires an injector upgrade. 330d injectors do not fit, as the fuel rail is different. People fit injectors from the older E60 535d cars!
