Hi All,
Can you all recommend which battery's your running in your cars 320d for the start stop after my service and recoding it's prob low power . So need a new one what cca should I be looking for most I found are 850 cca .

I bought an Exide one from eBay last year. Exide are basically the BMW ones rebranded I believe.

Varta are the OEM for BMW. You'll need an AGM because start/stop. Otherwise just match/exceed the Ah and CCA of the existing one. Then code and reset accordingly on install.

I think I normally end up buying from tayna batteries, either their website or eBay store - I think the latter might actually be cheaper.

On my own car (no start/stop), I upgraded slightly to EFB from standard lead acid, and found a much smaller battery with higher CCA than the existing one. I don't use that much power without the engine running, so thought I may as well save a few £ and 5kg.

I also need to change battery in my E90 325D N57, current battery is a 90A 900CCA,
When i look up online or in local car parts store they are all saying i need a start stop bettery but i do not have start stop in my car. Could i just replace with this battery instead?

Also, will i need to get it coded after i change the battery? does this have to be a BMW dealer?

Yes you could replace with that. Yes you'd want to code it. No it doesn't have to be a dealer; you could do it yourself with a small amount of investment.

Great Thanks, will the car run without being coded or will it not even start? Think my neighbor probably has all the equipment to code it in. He would change batteries in a lot of different cars so im guessing he has it.

Yeah it'll run fine. It would just cause the battery to fail prematurely if it was run like that long term. No worries driving it to a neighbour

You don't need an AGM battery as the 6 cylinder cars didn't have stop start, so yes something like the Halfords one is fine.

It will need coding though, but can be done by anyone, even yourself with the right software, something like ISTA or Bimmertool will do it.

I think i will go with the above battery. I'm getting the low battery warning when i have the ignition on for over a couple of minutes. I need to travel for work next week and my car will be parked up for 2 weeks so i want to get it changed before i head off.

I think i'll give it a go. Hopefully they have it in stock now.

Another question, apologies. If I go with the AGM battery do I still have to get that new one coded or will that run fine?

You always have to code a new battery. If you don't change the spec at all, you just code the new battery. If you change the spec, you need to code the new spec and that it's a new battery... I think

You always have to register a new battery. You only need to code it if it's different to the one it replaced.

True that. But what's the difference between registering and coding really? You need software/hardware to do either of them, but you're just setting flags/options rather than flashing firmware (programming). Too many terms!

I know, it's all telling a computer some new information etc, but it's all to do with the intelligent battery system being able to look after the battery in the best possible way.

I don't think my Neighbour can code the new battery so looks like i will have to find somewhere else to do it.

Would the software and cables be expensive to purchase? I would be fairly good with computers so I'm sure i could do it if i had the software.

Something like £30 for a decent cable. I have no idea what's well rated nowadays though.

I use bimmergeeks protool which is a bit of a spend, but so damn easy to use!
