2 10" JL w1 vs Rockford PL1 210

I had my sub installed today. I was going to put in 1 10w6, however after it was installed, it sounded horrible. We threw in 2 10w1's and Rockfords low end 2 10" ported subs and it sounded alot better. The one that sounded the best was the Rockfords but I still want the JL's...The rockfords look pretty tacky...Which one would you suggest?

I have a JL 250/1 as the amp. Both the JL and Rockford sound fairly similar except the Rockford is a bit louder and cripser. The downfall of the Rockford, again, is the look...very tacky...Also black carpet opposed to grey like the interior...And the size...it is bigger then the JL...Both are same priced, and they told me to give the rockford a chance for a week, and if I dont like it, I can go for the JL...

Explorer, where did you get it installed? I'm looking for a good place in the Northern New Jersey / Orange or Rockland area. I am interested in JL but open to other options. Post back when you make your final decision.

Sound Concepts in Nanuet, NY....He has a location on route 17 in Paramas as well...They do really good work..I've had them do the work on all of my cars and they are very upfront.... They told me I won't achieve what I want upfront. They mentioned that for the amount of money I'm spending, I wouldn't be getting my moneys worth due to the signal the audio system sends and how sealed the trunk is. I initially went in to spend about 300 more then I ended up spending since the subs that sounded best were the lower end subs....I might end up going with the JL's.....I will admit the rockfords sound great..if its sound that u're looking for strictly, the rockford and JL amp combo is great...but when i pop my trunk, i cringe...the JL w1's are a close 2nd so i may go that route... (as you can see..im pretty confused)

Explorer, what about trying:
  1. a single 10" JL 10W7 (not 10W6)
  2. a single 12" JL sub (any model)
  3. a more powerful amp
  4. a custom box with a larger enclosure space
Or some combination of those. There are still many options you can try before settling for the Rockfords.

One other suggestion, especially if you are going with a JL amp: make sure the shop installs a remote bass control. You definitely want a knob hidden discretely (but within reach of the driver) to be able to adjust the amount of bass coming from the trunk, depending on the type of music/volume you are listening to.

Well from what they tell me..the signal is weak coming from the head unit...so its a waste of money for me to go all out...i'd have to implement a bunch of other things in order for it to sound right...

the rockford sub doesn't work anymore..so im probably going to go tomorrow and have them swap it out for the JL...i just feel comfortable with the JL setup...i'll let u know how it goes

JL is far superior than the newer RF SUB's, amps, etc. FYi, I also have the 2510/1 and am planning on beefing up into the 500/1 with 2 10w6 's with the Logic 7 system. I'll let you know how it sounds once the car comes in.. Keep us posted on your progress.

i'll let you know how it sounds witht he 2 w1's...i'll even have them throw in 2 w6's for the hell of it and ill let you know how that sounds...they initially put in one and it didnt do anything....in a normal car it would have been perfect!! but since this trunk is soo sealed, it makes it tough for the bass to travel..when the trunk is open you can see how hard it hits.

Ok..so I went with the JL's...2 10" w1's....Looks like the other JL Amp blew...don't know how / why... The JL's sound pretty good..I'm not looking for mind blowing bass..just enough to fill the sound so I'm pretty content. Its also small enough that i keep the majority of my trunk space...the only tacky thing of this set up is that I have 2 bungee cords holding it back so it doesn't fly around.

Its amazing how sound tight that trunk is. When I open the trunk you can hear the bass and see how tight and crisp the sound is...the second you close the trunk, you hear nothing. I had to keep opening the trunk to see if it was still alive..

I wonder if the cars with the cold weather package (fold-down seats) carry the bass through any better?

it might carry a bit better if you put the center arm rest down since there is a opening in there. The ones without cold weather a sealed solid!
