Ridiculous!! These are not hugely polluting cars as these crazy tax amounts would suggest.

Failed, I knew front tyres were a bit worn on the edges, so I asked the guy if it'd pass before booking the mot, he had a look & said yes they'd most likely pass with an advisory but on closer inspection some cords were exposed on the inner edge of one tyre.
So a pair of PS4 will be going on it Saturday £340 for the pair all in.
I now have a dangerous defect, do not drive until repaired note on record, still only one day without using the car unfortunately I have tomorrow off work & would like to have taken a little drive out.

I might be in a similar situation in a week or so. My MOT is due and the front tyres do need changing, not due to low tread but due to small cracks appearing between the tread which I believe is down to the tyres being old and rubber starting to perish. I don't know whether this would cause an MOT failure, advisory etc.

Ask the mot tester what he thinks before you book the mot, didn't work out for me but mine were very border line on the edges with around 4mm across the rest, with about a 2 inch long patch of canvas showing right on the inner edge.
I suspect they became worse during the few hundred miles covered between sub frame being dropped & having a geo. Still they have lasted three years & covered 23,000, sometimes hard miles

If yours just have some cracks he should be able to tell you. There will be a manufacturing date on the tyres, last four numbers at the end of the DOT manufacturing code.

I cannot believe you guys!

Trying to scrape past a ticket inspection with known dodgy tyres on a 300HP BMW.

Those black circles are all that is keeping you in contact with the road and new rubber will be worth every penny.

If there are cracks in the tread and/or sidewalls then the rubber is past its sell by date and will be hard as nails and nowhere near as grippy as it was when new.

I have just replaced a full set of tyres which still had 6mm of tread left on my 140HP Volvo because they were 8 years old and the rubber was cracking up. I didn't need to ask the MOT inspector's opinion.

I simply asked the chap that was going to do my mot if the fronts were likely to pass an mot due to the edges being worn. If he had said no I would have replaced the fronts before the mot to avoid a fail.
It had nothing to do with 'trying to scrape past a ticket'.
If there hadn't been a small patch of cord showing on the inner edge they would still have been legal & most likely good for another few thousand miles.
Fortunately by taking the car in early for its mot ( as I always do) I wasn't driving around with a dangerous tyre until 24th of this month.
As you can see from the attached pic they still look legal, even the guy that fitted the new tyres said there was plenty of life left in the old ones, untill I pointed out the cord on the very inner edge.

Its not a case of skimping on tyres for me, its just the time available between now and the MOT and the lack of time available for me to get to the tyre shop I go to around work timings. They are going to be changed after the MOT in any case, before will be tricky.

The geo hasn't gone well, they are telling me the bolts have seized on the rears & they don't want to chance doing it today in case a bolt breaks. It seems I will have to bring it back in tomorrow

Geo all done, I guess a soak in penetrating fluid over night did the trick.
So only the 8th of October & £410 already spent on the car this month

Mine should be going for geo set up on Thursday but they have just rung me and said they are having a massive issue with a race car and can they do it on friday if they collect it and deliver it back. I've just spent £280 on a pair of front tyres + the geo + £60 stud conversion, this is going to get expensive

just taken it in for a service (£100 check service), warranty work (DAB/TV reception and Vanos), 2x recalls and an MoT. Hopefully £250 all in should sort it. God bless the Mondial Warranty

Yeah it is very good, although in my experience with my 540i at two local main dealers, when having issues they would just keep changing parts that were working fine in the hope of getting lucky & fixing the fault.
The list of parts replaced on that car was very long indeed.

Hopefully your experience is better.

When I was in Warrington the local dealer were hopeless and not pleasant to deal with, the one in Crewe are fine, I think most modern garages are the same in respect of they plug the car in and then go through a process of changing a series of parts hoping they get lucky.

Not so bad if you have bmw warranty, fault finding can get very expensive if not.

absolutely, I've just pinged it to them whenever I've had issues so its been a looked after motor. To be fair, BMW Crewe have been pretty fair over the years.

Wrote that prematurely and actually haven't done it yet but on here there's been nothing.
This forum is pretty much dead most of the time now.

Going to see Jason Barker from Birds on Sunday as he's going to stick it on his website for me.

Yeah, I had no real interest in mine when I advertised it on here.
I guess a lot of the good stuff has moved to the F series section.

That could work out, people do tend to pay a premium when buying from places like birds.
Hope it goes well Dann
