Worst dealer quote yet
Had my 335xi in for the blower motor recall. BMW of Northwest Arkansas. Service rep let me know my front brake pads were getting low, about 5mm. He quoted me...
$1098 to replace the front pads. Sweet merciful crap, I'm glad I own a wrench. |

Holy shit - that is impressive - like an hour of labor and $120 in parts - is your dealer rate like $900 an hour?

I would have said "I'll wait until the pad wear indicator comes on".

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Instead of asking you to sit at his desk and discuss your options, did he at least offer a barrel to bend you over as a courtesy before the attempted screwing?!

While it seems high to us DIYers that sadly isn't that far outside the norm. A friend at work has a newer Ford Focus and she called a few different shops for front brakes and rotors and none of the quotes came back under $500.... on a Focus... which probably has smaller brakes than my lawn tractor.

$215 an hour? That should come with the girlfriend experience.

Yep, sounds about right... new fords are expensive. My brand spanking new 2019 F-150 just needed $6700 worth of injector, HPFP, and turbo work at just slightly north of 7K miles. All covered under warranty of course but a little shocking none the less. What's even worse is this F-150 was a replacement for my 2017 F-150, that at 67K miles developed engine issues. Of course, it was 7K miles over warranty so they led me down a $3600 diagnostic rabbit hole that by 72K miles they were telling me I needed a new engine to the tune of $27,000 after parts and labor. My truck wasn't modded heavily, just an exhaust and mild SCT tune. I told them very politely to fuck themselves with something sharp and rusty and then I hired a lawyer who got ford to buy the truck back for what I paid as long as I put it towards another ford product. It's a bummer because I have been a Ford Truck guy since I was a kid. I grew up in a BMW household, but on a ranch, so my dad always had Ford trucks in the driveway, still does to this day. I'm pretty sure this will be my last F-150 for a while, I love the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 when it is running healthy (probably like the n54) but I just don't see myself hanging on to it after warranty, and I just can't justify an $80K super duty diesel. I kept my old tuner from my 2017 and I know SCT has new tunes for the 2019/20 3.5 EcoBoost and they say they are reliably getting 524HP and 609 ft/lbs. But I just shy away after my experiences, the last thing I want is to get denied a warranty claim on a $55K truck where the engine is half the cost of the entire vehicle. |

I can tell the world however that in the end, FORD did make it right (they actually encouraged me to do so), but it was a major hassle and required legal counsel. I just can't give the full story or post pictures of my original repair quotes, had to remove a few rants from the ecoboost forums as well. |

I'm putting nice stuff on it front and rear for $200. corrosion coated rotors, ceramic pads, all the hardware. and I'll do a better job than the brake jockey at the dealer. they have no shame. when I was in for the airbag recall the service advisor sat down with a bundle of paper and said "we found some stuff we should go over" I said "the valve cover and oil pan leak. and it needs the brake fluid changed ." and he said "I think we're good here" |
