Muffler would void my warranty?

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2011 328i manual coupe with an M-Sport package that I'm excited about... I was wondering what would happen to my warranty if I got a muffler installed. What part if the warranty would it void? I would buy a BMW Performance muffler but they are just too expensive...

They would have to prove that the part that failed did so because of the muffler. So short of an exhaust leak, probably nothing. And I would be wiling to bet nobody would even notice the muffler unless they were working on the exhaust system.

Yep! There is the burden of proof here- if anything it would void just that section of the car warranty at the very worst... but highly unlikely.

You just spent 28 grand on a bimmer and you can't swing a PE? They can be found new for well under a thousand. Anything else and you're pushing your luck.

Agreed with doc- however maybe he prefers the sound or the set up of another exhaust, for example Dinan, Borla, Eisenmann

Technically Pete is correct, however it comes down to your SA and regional Warranty admin. If they "question the use of the vehicle", they can cause quite a headache on future warranty work.

But with your car being a 328i, you should encounter few warranty claims than us N54 folk.

Honestly, u won't have any issues even with the most crazy of setups unless you are actually making a warranty claim. At which point ur better off removing your crazy setup before warranty work. An exhaust/muffler doesn't really do anything meaningful. You could run around without one and only have an issue when a cop pulls u over for the noise as a fix a ticket. So feel free since the exhaust/muffler has no impact on warranty (short of having a pipe which is sealed so no air can escape

Thanks guys

Do you know where I can get one? The dealership said the muffler is $1,200 not including installation.

getbmwparts.com ...they will have a lower price than a dealer and they might have free shipping. You may also want to try ReevesBMW.

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on a new part which only has the single function to muffle sound. Pick one up for 50% off in the For Sale section of the regional forums.
