LSD...sort of

I think I read about this somewhere a while back. I may be wrong but I think they wanted to use it for the next X5, X3 or some type of SUV stating that it could be used on awd applications also.

Hey Guys...question, i have searched about LSD and im still confused about it...

so..it controls the way the the rear wheels spins if its like..slipping or something? And i've read somewhere that it creates torque as well..?
someone tell me PLEASE! =) thanks guys

Say this a couple times and then visualize it. It is the easiest way to explain it.

"LSDs provide power to the wheel that has the best grip."

Open diffs do the opposite. Open diffs provide power to the wheel that has the worst grip, or the wheel that is the easier to spin.

I would not say it provides power to the wheel that has the best grip. It still provides a lot of power to the wheel that is spinning but it also provides power to the other wheel that has traction unlike the open which all the power goes to the one that is spinning. The amount of power that is applied to the wheel that has traction depends on the design of the LSD and the amount of friction is applied from one side to the other.

I believe the power application depends on the type of LSD. The Quaife ATB and Torsen (aka TORque SENsing) diffs send power to the one with the most traction.

I agree that the clutch type LSDs send power to both wheels.

There are some very interesting "smart" differentials that have CPUs that adjust power output to each half shaft based on input from steering angle, tire rotation, and other relevant factors. Multiple algorithms can be specified, and incorporated into a system like the M-drive.

Is it just me, or does that unit look/sound a lot like the xDrive adjustable fore/aft diff? Double-X drive!
