Wow my car is such a rookie, only 130,000 km, bought it with low mileage. I still enjoy driving it, it does everything so well, the one thing I hate is the seats, they are so uncomfortable. My wife's Volvo has amazing seats, maybe the sport seats are better.

If I lived nearby I'd pull my car in and let you work on it lol

There's an indie Porsche guy near us, and he started by renting a bay at someone else's shop. I guess he now has the entire place. It's wall to wall cars and he does MB and BMW too, but I mean there's nowhere to put cars, with plates as far away as VA on Porsches (I'm in the Phila. burbs).

Who knows at some point maybe you could be like that (I know you have a regular job so maybe after that's done)!

I'll be the old dude down the street who has a garage full of tools that his family will not know what to do with when he kicks off. LOL

Or the old dude down the street who fixes small engines and equipment.

The only work on cars I do other than mine are my one brother who likes to turn wrenches and a few local guys for easy stuff like brakes, shocks, and oil changes.

He could also be like the guy I bought my car from. He has a shop on his property filled with cars and does 6 figure restoration jobs. Saw that and was like well crap, guess there's no better deal out there lol

Congratulations!

Your list of replaced parts is rather skimpy compared to my 2006 330i. Here is the ones you are missing that I have on mine:

- Fuel Pump -cracks on top plastic
- Fuel pressure regulator - cracks on top of plastic
- Eccentric shaft sensor
- Steering Angle Sensor

Good catch. I missed it in transferring from my spreadsheet to the post. ESS went in at 305K. You can see in my 300,000 mile update I mentioned I had the parts in queue.

But "rather skimpy" is good

Funny, that made me think of my first car and where I bought it--a salvage yard repair shop/restos. I loved Volvos even without my parents ever having owned one. So I bought a 244 at age 19, 11 years old, all rusted through fenders, 1/4s, doors lol

The guy that sold it to me had dozens of volvos......so he said I'll throw in rear doors. I said well I have no clue how to put them on, so you do it, and we have a deal. From there it was a love affair with my first car, duct tape went on the fenders, I tinted the windows myself, put a high mount stop light, and pretended it was a 745 turbo wagon, which was my dream car (in a few years I'd have a landlord that had a 16 valve 740 GLE which was sweet). 4 speed manual with ice cold air! I had 2 more until 1998, when I finally bought a brand new car...

Think about how long cars last now?? My 335i is 14 years old, there is zero rust. My first car at 11, was literally deteriorating from rust...my Lexus is 15 y.o., zero rust (although it came from FLA)...

Well, my first car, a 1992 Cutlass Supreme, was 12 years old when I got it, with minor rust. Rotted out, holes and everything, over the course of a year and a half, with 125,000 on the odometer. My last car, a 2007 Volvo S80, is now 14 and rust free with 188k on it. I sold it to a friend for his daughter as her Honda was unsafe to drive and that's, well, a Volvo. It's still running great after I replaced the alternator a week or two before I replaced it with my now 10 year old, also rust free BMW. Both the Volvo and BMW have been Wisconsin cars their entire lives. I got the S80 as a one owner car with 154k on it, but the BMW has changed hands I think 5 times now?

My dad's 1998 Toyota Camry had a decent amount of rust. It spent 21 years of its life in the Midwest and Northeastern part (He brought it brand new in 1998 at Samson Toyota in New Jersey. We moved to Chicago in 2005). We sold the car last year with 195k on it. It started to rust on the rear passenger side door and by the windshield molding. That's why the carpets were always wet after a car wash, rain, or snow. The water starting getting down to the electronics. Before we sold it, we had an issue where water got onto the wires that power the fuel pump corroded from under the dash because of all the rust by the windshield seal. Cost $300 to fix the wires. We also had to get a new windshield because the old one had a long crack and across the windshield and corner. I think that was $700 plus the new windshield seal. Then new rear wheel bearing $300 to install those. So, yeah we sold it I learned to drive on that car.

My mom had a 2003 BMW 330xi (brought CPO in 2006). It started to rust from the rear quarter panels (sold it for $8,500 in 2013 with 90k miles) and brought a 2013 Honda Accord EX-L V6). I think that's a common area for rust on the E46. Other than that, my E90 hasn't rusted a bit. Not even the undercarriage has rust (I mean it has some but not ALOT )

Hows the E brake and did it ever wear to the point you had to service or adjust it? Do you press in the clutch when you shut off the car so it doesnt make noise?

Funny you should ask. So on most days I park my car at night after ripping up the local roads to my house. One road has an 11-turn corkscrew that drops down a mountain about 800 feet in just over a mile. Then up the road to my driveway that follows a river. Quite fun. The car is smoking hot when I put it away for the evening. Any track guy will tell you not to park the car with the E-brake on after a track session. I just do it instinctively. Here's what heat does to the brake shoes (just replaced them last November for the 1st time):

I always leave mine off in the garage, which may not be a great habit, but it came from the Maxima since that car uses the pistons for the e-brake (no shoes it has a lever to basically apply the disc brakes). And that seemed to lead to frozen or stuck calipers. I'm thinking too that I'm giving the cables a break?

I do use my e-brake in public, though. Just in case? But does just in case make sense? I notice that there can be a steep hill in Phila and nobody, as in not even one car, curbs their wheels. It's kinda a joke, all pointing straight ahead. Then you go out west and everyone curbs their wheels.

As an aside, when I was doing my Lexus rear rotors, I forgot the parking brake was on, and I yanked the disc off. Shoes and springs went flying--I was actually surprised I got things back together. At first I couldn't find a diagram online and panicked, but then I became Sherlock Holmes. Hey genius, why not take off the other side, and look at how it's supposed to be?!

On a 1995-1999 Maxima, ever notice rust in the rear right 1/4? That's because the power antenna has a t that goes to the rubber tube draining the water (joins with the sunroof drains), and this corrodes and breaks, dumping the water into the wheel well. So it starts to rust from the inside out, with the paint bubbling. How stupid!

My 335 doesn't have any rust...then again it's seen snow I think 3X. Yep, I was the guy who didn't want to drive it in the rain when I first got it. People here said, "Dude, it's not a Ferrari. It's ok to drive it in the rain!"
