awesome, thanks!

I've had mine sitting since last fall to install. Hopefully things warm up here at some point in MI.

After finding the M3 mod - I wish I would have waited on done it instead

But at this point I spent good $$ on CF Microfilter Housing, ECU Cover, & Brake Reservoir Cover + I just bought a new cowl base since those friggen clips that hold the bridge containing the cables all but one busted and the thing was hanging down onto the engine...

Old thread revival! I run without a cowl, main reason is for extra air flow and I like the sound. I gene no issues keeping engine bay clean...I have a few questions for those who have done this mod.

1. I would not use the hood seal since I want more air flow & sound...did this setup allow more sound and air?

2. When raining does it drain water? That is the only time I use my cowl lol!

Are any of the plastic bolts needed for this mod? Do we must reuse our bolts?

Has anybody with a 135i tried this? I ask because the part numbers for the cowl piece are different for the 1 and 3 series. Thanks!

Does the cowl for the 335 serve any structural purpose? Am I losing anything by updating to the M3 cowl? Also, where do the 2 sensors go that sit in the 335 cowl? I believe they may be air temp and air pressure, but who knows?

Just to confirm, the BMS filters WILL fit under the M3 cowls? If so, is it a straight drop in or do the cowls and/or filters have to modified in any kind of way?

Thanks!

I don't believe it serves anything structurally, it's hard plastic. The pollen sensor (pass side) and hood sensor (drivers side, if you have an alarm) go back close to their respective places. The pollen sensor does need the wiring extended a bit.

Assuming you are referring to the dual cone filters and NOT the BMS cowl filters. Yes, they will fit. You can an incredible amount of more room in the engine bay and do not have to remove the cowl anymore to get access to the rear filter clamp, an OCC if you are running one, etc.

So I discovered this thread AFTER I already ordered the BMS Cowl Filters. Are you saying I could still use the BMS Cowl Filters under the M3 cowl, and not have to buy separate filters specific for the M3 Cowl?

If so, would I still need all six of these parts?
64-31-6-958-817 Filter housing lower, w/M3 Left $26.56
64-31-6-958-818 Filter housing lower, w/M3 Right $26.56
64-31-6-958-815 Filter housing upper, w/M3 Left $53.49 higher than expected
64-31-6-958-816 Filter housing upper, w/M3 Right $53.49 higher than expected
64-31-9-144-869 Side cover w/M3 Left $7.92
64-31-9-144-870 Side cover w/M3 Right $7.92

Are the side covers really necessary? Do they help the housing to lock in? At first I thought they covered the DME and Brake Fluid reservoir similar to the OEM covers, but a closeup on ecs shows otherwise (looks sort of like outer shell like a license plate holder).

Anyway, total is a bit high at ~ $170. Maybe good X-mas gift from the wife...For now, I may stick to the BMS Cowl Filters and leave the OEM side covers in place with the HVAC system (my only concern is water getting in DME area if by chance it's not perfectly sealed with the JB4 harness installed). Should still remove some obstruction for increased sound. Opinions?
