Hopefully I'll have the same experience as you re longevity. For any future readers that find themselves in the same situation, I've attached a couple of pics of the two side-by-side. The fitment of the TYC is perfect. The only thing you have to do is transfer over the rubber plug that secures the fan to the hose on the right side and the two little clips on the top right and left side for the coolant reservoir overflow line. My car has the oil cooler that screws into the bottom side, so it was necessary to have the car in the air to do the replacement.
Curious if this problem was fixed for you. Would be good to get a second update on this!

Also ran into 2EFF recently on on 2009 328i with 140k km. Replaced the factory Bosch fan assembly with TYC. It seems to have resolved the code but not enough time or mileage to comment on reliability.

Update: the TYC fan failed after 17 months and 825 km. See above thread for more details

@Luper52: Yes, a year later and no more codes from the fan. It works perfectly. Like the OP I too am baffled by the cost of the OE fan. It’s a no-brainer to get the TYC fan from Rock Auto. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like Rock Auto stocks the TYC fan anymore but Amazon has it with prime shipping for around $230
