3M Dinoc vs 3M Scotchprint 1080 - Black CF High Gloss Comparison!

It was time to wrap my trim and after many hours of online research for the perfect material, I was left with one question:

What the heck is the difference between two very similar vinyls; 3M Dinoc and 3M Scotchprint 1080 both in High Gloss Black CF?

See the pictures for reference, but it is easy to see that the pattern on the 1080 is smaller than the Dinoc. Also the Dinoc has a slight pattern to each individual rectangle giving it that "fibre" look, were as the 1080 has a flat smooth look. Both have a similar gloss look, with a slight edge given to the 1080. I would say that is due to the flat surface vs the patterned Dinoc being better at reflecting light.

What has me really stuck between the two is the thickness of each material. The 1080 is clearly thinner than the Dinoc by about roughly 30% (purely subjective based on feel!). How that relates to ease of use I don't know, but for someone who is going to attempt to wrap his trim for the first time I know it is on the back of my mind. So I ask:

-Is the 1080 really that much easier to work with?
-If I am looking for about as perfect as a wrap as you can get am I crazy to try this myself? So far most picture I can tell where there is folding and that would drive me mad.

That's funny I just ordered 12 samples from Metro myself. Same ones plus a few of the brushed looks in the 1080. Everything I've read thus far says the 1080 is the stuff to use.

Order your samples directly from 3M. They're totally free.

It really disgusts me to see how huge of a markup there is on vinyl, especially 3M products, and then that places have the audacity to charge for samples that 3M provides for free.

The di-noc is an architectural vinyl that 3m implemented for covering flat or very light curvatures. It's very stiff and difficult to work with, especially without a catalyst or application product (Sprays etc).

The 1080 scotchprint is VERY user friendly and contours nicely. Its a cast vinyl with a clear laminate which offers a ton of UV and weathering advantages over typical vinyls.. Definitely choose the 1080, even if you prefer the di-noc "look". When it comes to compound curves you'll be happy you did :P

Which one has the flat feel?

I don't want to feel the fiber but I've never been in an M3 and felt the carbon fiber, anyone confirm that it's flat or has fiber texture?

I do interior trim wraps in CF all the time and I use 4x3ft (48x36in) and it leaves some scraps. However, if you mess up a lot, i guess you could play it safe and get a bigger piece.

It is also my understanding that 3M created the 1080 for exterior use and the DiNoc for interior use.

It's flat, and finished with a high gloss protective coat. The actual CF is textured, but raw CF is never left exposed without being moulded in a protective coat (generally epoxy resin), which is smooth and shiny.

For this reason, the 3M vinyls look nothing like real CF, at least not in the way any of us are used to seeing it used. I have both 3M DiNoc and 1080 carbon fiber vinyls, and while they look nice, they don't look like the real deal. So if you like the style as a decorative accent, go for it, but if you want it to look like the real deal, don't bother.

Are you guys having a tint shop install this or doing it your selves?

It seems like it could be complicated--- what should one expect to pay to install it?

i ordered 3M Dinoc black and high gloss, a well as the 1080 scotchprint. IMO the DiNoc has a much nicer look/feel, but has bigger (and more textured) "weaves". The 1080 is flatter and a much smaller pattern. If anyone is interested ill post pics comparing all three DiNoc High gloss/Normal, and 1080 for comparison with the OPs pics.

How do you do that? They don't have an online store.

edit - looks like the free samples for "car owners" are gone. Filled out the form as a graphics manufacturer
