Ground Cable Question

Does anyone know what the part number is for the ground cable located under the hood by the washer fluid? I've got a 2011 328i (N51)

I've got some corrosion on mine and it's turning green. I've called the BMW dealer and they couldn't help.

P/N is 12427840580.

Your cable looks fine though. From what I can see it isn’t cracked or decaying.

I wouldn’t replace it unless you’re actually experiencing symptoms indicative of ground strap failure (long crank time being a major one).

Looks fine. I would not touch it either.

However, I ordered this one: Ignition Ground Strap (left): 12427578869. This is for my 2008 328xi wagon N52K engine. Likely the same. It is not for your starter, this one is for your ignition from what I can see in the picture.

Ah, I did not realize this PN existed! Looks like 12427578869 as you say, and not the PN I listed.

Thanks. I took it off and cleaned it up a year ago but my car does have a slow crank during startup

Let us know if it fixes the issue!

You probably saw this, but looks like my PN is wrong and rt7085's is correct.

I hope that's my issue but it sounds like it might not be. My starter doesn't turn over as strong as it used to and I've already replaced the battery and ground cable underneath the car. I'll try this next but I'm hoping my starter isn't on its way out.

ground strap

Hi, I ran into a trouble with this ground strap, looking at your picture I see 2 grounds bolted: flat copper and a shielded one. Where does the shielded one go or what's it's PN? The flat/copper is 12427578869, but what's the other one in the corrugated isolation? Thanks! (e90 N51 328ix)

The photo on this thread is for the interference suppression band that attaches on top of the engine. It is a ground, but not the starter ground that is beneath the engine.

There is no other ground in that photo.

You mean the one in black corrugated conduit, with the grey label? The label has 7 592 926 printed on it, which is part of the transmission wiring harness.

Before replacing it, test the grounding with a multimeter.
+ve post in the engine bay to -ve post in the engine bay should show a similar voltage to +ve post in engine bay to engine block.

Test, yes, but have to do it under load to find bad grounds or battery cables. Try that when cranking the starter. If you just test with normal current draw (mA rather than tens or hundreds of amps when cranking), you won't find problems unless they are really bad.

I would like some clarification on this since you seem to know where these are.

On my car, I am finding two parts for ground cable:

Engine Ground Cable - 12427549393
Interference-Suppression Band - 12427578869

Pictures of these parts indicates they are not different part numbers for the same thing, they are different cables and probably in a different location.

The first part (Engine Ground Cable) looks like the ground cable I can see under the hood connecting to the top of the engine on the passenger side.

The second part (Interference-Suppression Band) is a bit more dubious. I've gathered from what I'm reading that it is a second ground cable and is on the driver's side of the car under the engine? Can anyobne provide any further details on where this is and how to access it? (removal of the underbody paneling I assume is a prequisite?)

There is a ground cable attached to a bracket beneath the oil pan with the same bolts that secure the oil level sensor, it runs from there to the adjacent left side frame rail.

Just for clarity, what you are looking at in the photo is the Interference-Suppression Band. The larger starter ground is under the car and yes, you have to remove the underbody panel under the engine to access it.

There is no reason to replace the Interference-Suppression Band in the photo in its current condition.

N52 here with 190k. I did the same as you. Ground straps then battery. It ended up being the starter. I think the starter did well at 190k. It didn't completely die, but just about.

Same with me. Everyone will have a different experience, but my 2010 e60 N52 with 120k had been starting slowly for the better part of a year. When I say slowly, I mean relative to my other N52. Then, this week, just completely died. If it's starting slowly and already checked the grounds, seems like a ticking time bomb, but YMMV. Luckily a new Bosch starter is pretty cheap and it isn't a very difficult repair.

hey, i have the same issue - how did you remove the nut thats on the engine bay side? The silver thing (I am not sure what that is) is really in its way and i have no good clearance on unbolting the engine side.

See the yellow circle... any suggestions?
