Safelite windshield replacement - Sticker shock
Hello all, new member here, previously been on E46fanatics but got my E90 back in June.
Unfortunately today while driving home, I got a fat rock to hit my windshield, causing a nice 10 inch crack right in my line of sight. I went straight to Safelite and plugged all my vehicle info in and get this: 500 dollars to replace the windshield with insurance coverage, insane. I also saw that there were different options regarding climate control windshield (570), normal, green tint, or grey tint strip (each cost 510), somehow the climate control windshield is only 60 dollars extra. I suppose I'm going with the climate control windshield since the price difference is negligible when I have to pay a 500 dollar deductible regardless of my choice. What happened to the cost of windshields? They have gone dramatically up, past forum posts said windshields for E90s cost in the ballpark of ~$250, I had a 2014 Honda Accord where the windshield and side window only cost around 150 together through insurance. Also worried about the rain/light sensor since on my E46 the windshield was replaced once (Pilkington brand) and they never worked right again, even with INPA reinitialization. |

Oh so only about $500? That's great
Yes it's for the climate control and sensors and shit that's extra on the e9x and newer gens

On my old 330Ci with automatic lights and rain sensor, Safelite quoted me $400 with crap Fuyao glass, whereas an independent glass shop (the same one the dealer farms it's work out to) installed a Pilkington for $235. The climate comfort glass has a UV coating on it - it's worth it! |

Safelite replaced the windshield on my 2011 X3 last month for $496. They installed Pilkington. The dealer quoted $1,500.
My only complaint is the driver's seat got some black stuff during the install. It cleaned up very easily, but I didn't notice on time and my clothes got dirty. |

If it is $500 with insurance, then presumably your glass deductible is $500. Doing it through the dealer with BMW glass, mine was $1500+.
But with $0 insurance deductible for glass, it cost me nothing. Which is why I insisted on going through the dealer.

I'd be interested to know who my local BMW uses for their windshield replacements. I know it's not them and they just sub it out along with bodywork but they wouldn't tell me…. It would be funny if it was safelite anyway.

I just dropped the car off for my appointment with Safelite and asked to see the windshield, I was given a FUYAO brand windshield with a green tint strip, as far as I could tell in the shop it is NOT climate comfort as ive seen in pictures but the worker told me it should be apparent when its back outside in the sun. Needless to say I am pretty upset as I was expecting a pilkington windshield as was the case with my E46.

Fuyao glass is not worth $500. I'd wager they didn't use OE BMW seals either… |

500 isnt going to get you an OEM windshield, youre looking at 900 for a cheap install and 1500 for the dealer.
Youre wanting a deal but not comparing apples to apples. |

I just got back from picking up the car, and I must say I am very pleasantly surprised. Windshield is very slightly tinted, id say 80% due to the IR coating thats applied to it, with a green band at the top. After dropping off the car I decided to let them go with the install since Fuyao is apparently the manufacturer of glass for newer BMWs. Parking the car in the sun all day, its blocking heat much better than the 70% ceramic tint I had previously, no need for a sunshade.

Safelite replaced mine via insurance (Florida law insurance free replacement) last week of September and then first week in October car in front of me kicked up a rock on the highway and put a nice little pit in the brand new one. Can't win.
