Ordered the adapter - going to give this a try on my 2016 X3 to update the maps from 2015-2 to 2016-2. Any tips?

Thanks.

May seem a bit overkill, but as I don't know your starting point (computer proficiency, org skills etc) this is detailed. Don't take offence if you already know this stuff/work this way :-)

1. Read the different approaches listed in the thread (and others) - there seems to be no ONE way to do this.

2. Make sure you have the downloaded the programs needed before starting. I would suggest getting Firefox right away for the ftp link. And have Filezilla too. (this will save you a couple of trips back and forth between car and house with internet access to get at programs.

3. Pick an approach. If you are unused to working with computers, write down the specific steps for that approach, print and bring to car.

4. If the approach you picked didn't work, review, double check that you did what you wanted and the settings took effect. If all was done as descfribed and it didn't work, pick the next approach, document and try out. Lather, rinse, repeat :-)

Shouldn't a 2016 X3 be equipped with an NBT system?

If so - what does this mean for the process?

Thanks.

It means you need E-sys and a ENET cable. The process described here doesn't apply to F-series vehicles equipped with NBT navigation systems.

So - are there any instructions to get the map code for an NBT system?

This? http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1054704

Yeah, that's the basic procedure.

Packfan, sorry for missing that you were not applying this to an E-series vechicle.

Reading the other thread for 2-series that you're linking to, it seems that some vehicles were preloaded with the FSC for 2016 maps. Perhaps it would be worth it trying to update without going through getting the DE file and see if you are one of the lucky ones. Worst thing that can happen is that the update won't get accepted and and you'll be no worse off.

Thanks OP! Was able to generate a FSC and updated my maps to 2016-2. Only ran into a small issue with the hex editor in OP post, it did not display the contents of the file after I opened it on my Surface Pro with Windows 10. Google'd and found Free Hex Editor Neo which worked fine.

I think that is normal. That happened to me so I kept a copy of the file in a separate folder.

Can this method be used to generate an fsc code to activate BMW apps? I just retrofitted combox into my E90. I need a 9c fsc code. Does that mean I could use fsc.exe with my a.hex file and use 0x9C as the map code?

Cannot generate 9C FSC's or any other FSCs. They have to come from BMW.

Map update codes can only be generated because they are based off the 1B FSC. All other FSCs are based on the master BMW certificates and no-one but BMW has those.

Download the mega link at the top of the post here. NBT users should follow that post but CIC users can ignore everything there, just get the Generator.rar from it and move on.
Is there anywhere to get the FSC.EXE file that does NOT have a Trojan/Virus in it?

The file in the given link is infected.

I haven't been able to find a clean copy elsewhere.

Thanks.

Yeah, some scanners flag it and virustotal isn't exactly happy with it. A perfectly safe workaround is to run it in a virtual machine. You can install Vbox or VMWare for free and run a free Windows image in it. This completely isolates and protects your real OS from anything you run in the VM.

It's because it's a packed binary, that's why it flags most virus scanners because packing a binary is a technique used to obfuscate it's code which is a trick lots of malware uses so it instantly raises the flag on any virus scanners.

Are you sure that is the cause?

Other packed binary EXE's don't trigger AV alerts, yet this one is flagged by almost all of the better programs.

Also the other NBT generator which does the same thing does not trigger the virus scanners.

The fingerprint found is also fairly specific.

A VM is a good suggestion.

Thanks.

But the NBT generator isn't a packed binary, it was also coded and compiled a lot cleaner than the CIC generator.

THANK YOU!

Out of curiosity, when I connected via FTP, was I talking to the CIC?

If this is all too daunting there is also the option of paying like the OP said. I saw a site offering the lifetime code for $50:

http://www.bmwfsc.ca/product/bmw-mini-fsc-code/

(I am not affiliated with them.)

I was having a hard time finding the maps, but I came across the site doing a google search. I was able to generate the code last year and have been using it to update maps every year.
