It was an extreme hypothetical to make a point. If a person had no interest in the driving experience he'd go for the 320d (or 318d or 316d) because it would always be more efficient to run even if doing low miles. But, to my mind at least, the reason someone might go for a fast 6-cyliner petrol rather than a frugal 4-cylinder diesel is the same as the reason someone might go for a manual over an automatic (the theme of this thread). An option like an auto gearbox which sacrifices the driving experience (leaving aside DCT and the like for the moment) seems counterintuitive on a car whose primary purpose is driving experience.

The slow first to second shift gets on my nerves around town,but I'm so glad I got a manual the rest of the time. I was tempted by DCT, but the potential wallet fire put me off.
