Spark plugs N54 335i - Bosch or NGK

Hi guys

I was wondering what spark plugs you recommend for the N54 335i e93? I see there are two popular choices: The BOSCH and the NGK.

I plan to put in a JB4, DCI and DPS.

Bosch is likely OEM supplier but NGK has a cooler logo...

The NGK's have been known to give more power and by memory are slightly cheaper, but there have been a few negative reports. Having said that there have also been negative reports from the bosch plugs...

At the end of the day, I'm sure there probably aint a great deal of difference I would tend to stick with the oem bosch plugs personally.

I went with Bosch and swapped all 6 recently. Solved the misfiring issue.

I trust what BMW uses, so I use Bosch spark plugs.

I have NGKs in mine. Runs perfectly. Much easier to gap down when running higher power.

I could start something here, we all know that the Japs make the best cars THEY JUST GO FOREVER so it stands to reason that they make the best plugs.
I can tell you from my Dyno tuning 30 odd years experience that NGK are the best plugs for most applications, but whether or not they work in the Beemer i can't say.
Though i do have a set of NGK PLZKBR7A-G in the glove box, been there for about a year ready for testing, so maybe its time to fire up the dyno and have a play.

+1 to NGK. Fairly straight forward when gapping. No more misfires!

Please let us know and keep us updated, as I'm in the position to change my sparks soon and tossing up between NGK or OEM Bosch.

Never had the background test/studies to say which is better preforming so it would be good to see and review the two from you.

A fair test would be to Dyno with new NGKs. Take those out and put in new Bosch OEM plugs and re-Dyno. Comparing new NGKs to old OEMs is bad science.

Hate to state the obvious but as Pete mentioned NGK is Japanese and Bosch is German so why wouldn't BMW use Bosch OEM?

By the way do our cars have platinum tipped or normal plugs? Is platinum a thing of the past? How long should either last?

I recently called up several shops to purchase plugs and often got asked this...

shop: "hey mate can I ask a dumb question"
me: "sure"
shop: "why are you changing the spark plugs on a 3yo car, they come with platinum iridium plugs that last 100,000km"
me: "car is tuned"

So I assume we the long lasting plats in our n54s. Active Motorwerke when diagnosing my misfire were reluctant to replace the plugs mentioning that they should last a long time... (my car has only done 48,000km)

Lemonpark - yes on my FBO JB4 engine.

liteonled - i used them because they are proven by the people in the states to run one step cooler than the bosche but they only last around 25000miles as opposed to 50000 or something like that. since ive changed them over, ive had no missfires

what im running atm

Ok thanks, that's good to know... will check when mine were done last & what they are.

I saw some plugs that looked like those Iridiums in my cousins Prado the other day. I thought they might have been platinum but he didn't think so so we changed them anyway for normal ones. They had the same fine electrode but a really big gap on them like a 1 mm or so, what ever it was it seemed way too large.

Is it that Platinum spark plugs have a larger air gap than normal plugs or does the electrode wear down? Does anyone know what the plug gap should be for N54?
