N47 gearbox help

Hi all,

I've just lost reverse in my 2010 320d. I've done a search and found this to be a common problem that requires a gearbox change.

I've found that the part number is GS6-45DZ HAK

But when I search for used gearboxes there are many different part numbers and some physically look different, yet are advertised as fitting my car.

Was there just a large crossover of gearbox that are interchangeable? Or do I need to match the part number correctly.

The prices also vary from £200 up to £600

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried looking after n real oem, they give you a picture/drawing of what your gearbox would look like. Might be of some help?

Yes thats where I got the part number from.

I just don't know how the gearboxs are different and if they are interchangeable. It seems strange that there is different gearboxes all for the same model of engine and chassis.

Potential for some early gearbox's to predate stop/start. Meaning no zero gear sensor on those.
Can this reverse gear thing not be repaired?

I'm assuming the differences in part numbers you're seeing are in the "HAZ" bit at the end? I'd guess that any GS6-45DZ box will fit, and mechanically work. Though as andystobbs says, you may miss the zero gear sensor etc.

The other ones I’ve found which “fit my vehicle” are
GS6-37DZ
GS6-53DZ

Ah. I don't know about the 37DZ, but the 53DZ would fit a 325d or 330d, I believe...certainly a 330d. I have no idea whether they would actually fit, but I'd avoid them and find a 45DZ.

Though the 53DZ is a really solid box...but that makes me think it must be significantly different from the 45DZ.

I imagine the 37DZ would be for a 316/318d or something.

So it took a while but I've managed to get a gearbox.

What clutches do people recommend for a 320d or are there any to avoid?

Possibly I was in contact with a company to possibly rebuild it, as I was struggling to find one.
