First check what integration level is. If it's late 2008 or early 2009 then CIC must be updated to higher I-level, so you will able to install a new maps. Just go to nearest dealer with key fob and ask.

I need to do this at some point. My car was manufactured something like June 2009. Hopefully I can update.

Firmware version of CIC is very important at this stage and looks to me like car never been updated at all. Solution is update CIC before loading maps, but I would like to know car's I-level to say that on 100%.

I'm having the same issue at the moment, mines a late 2008 model CIC but as per BMW dealer standards has never had any firmware updates. Been quoted £100 + VAT from Darren Wood to update the CIC firmware.
Can confirm though, if your firmware is before about 2009/2010 you'll struggle without upgrading the firmware first. |

I plug the USB drive in and nothing happens. CIC firmware versions prior to 2009 / 10 ish have to be updated by DVD for map updates (or so is my understanding). For me though its mainly the 7 digit postcode functionality I want which requires the firmware upgrade too. Cant believe BMW sold a car in 2014 that can't find addresses via postcode even though my 2006 TomTom can!!

TBH I haven't struggled without the postcode function yet as most places I've been are either on the places of interest or have a road name.

As far as I'm aware yep (for map updates) but I'm pretty sure the current latest 2015 maps haven't yet been released on DVD (only USB) and that BMW might not be releasing on DVD in future so it made sense to me to go for the firmware upgrade since it apparently fixes a lot of bugs and allows me to use 7 digit postcode too

I'm up at Darren Wood's next week. I may ask but I actually use my phone for all navigation so I'm not too fussed.

Be aware folks that if you have an early CIC like me and then you do a retrofit combox upgrade via folks on this forum you wont be able to have you CIC firmware updated via a dealer. You'll have to go back to your original hardware and then when you put the combox back in you won't be able to get BMW apps anymore. Makkan can explain it better than I ever can & this may only effect a tiny number of people but I was one of the unlucky ones so just be aware if you have a combox retrofit and are considering a CIC firmware update via the dealer. As said my circumstances were unique and my dealership were dickheads!

Have you CIC from factory? Is possible to downgrade CIC back for previous version or keep actuall and activate bmw apps via scripts. Bmw dealer will NOT able to update firmware if CIC or Combox been retrofitted. Always original parts must come back on place first. In this case if you would like to update any modules after retrofit, there is always a way to do it in different way. Last edited by litany; 08-06-2015 at 12:43 AM.. |

Yes i had CIC from factory and It was completely NOT installers fault and couldn't be forseen. Basically I needed to have my HPFP replaced under warranty a couple of months after I had a combox retrofit and so i had to put back to TCU & MULF as the dealership said the ECU software needed to be updated as part of the claim. Despite me telling dealership not to update CIC firmware they still went ahead & did it claiming they couldn't do the HPFP under warranty if the car wasn't completely upgraded. Basically spun me a load of bollocks but there wasn't much I could do. Tore the service manager a new one in front of everyone in the showroom when he told me I wasn't allowed to change the car's specification!
