Hi

My brother in law just bought E93 335i approx 2 weeks ago private sale.

First problem came up water pump he got that replaced, now it's making some rattling noise i thought it could be Heat shield but as he got his car inspected from Sytner they said its the Wastegate Actuator..

They won't just replace that they will replace the whole which includes turbo chargers Cost £5500....


He just paid for the car £5800.

I have heard there is some sort of kit available to repair this problem any ideas, Or if anyone had similar problem, what did you guys do..

If this can be done can anyone recommend the garage who does this, My brother in law lives in Seven Kings Essex.

sounds like the common N54 wastegate rattle, BMW will not do a repair kit, they will just swap turbos. You can buy a kit off ebay but they have to be cut out and its not an easy job. If I were him I would take this opportunity and swap the units out for a set of Pure stage 2 high flows (cost circa £2800 on black friday deal) or he can buy china turbos for £1500ish. either way the turbos have to come off, which is quite a big job as the front subframe has to come off too.
Without wanting to pee on his matches it sounds like he could of bought a minefield. Bothe waterpump, thermostat and wastegate rattle are pretty common but expensive issues on N54 motors....along with coils, injectors, high pressure fuel pumps.
it might be worth looking at purchasing the BMW extended warranty and then claiming after 2-3 months?

If its not throwing an error codes(30FF) and drives ok, you can code in a wastegate rattle fix, it basically adds more preload to them some how i think, which reduces the rattle. Its more just like applying a bandaid though as it does mean the turbos are on the way out most likley.

You can get replacement OE equivalent turbos from Autodoc for about 700-800 quid or upgraded ones from Littco for 1500, but they will require a remap

If he's not getting a reduced engine power light under hard acceleration then you can just live with westgate rattle. Mine rattled from 80,to 109,000 miles until they no longer held boost.
I replaced mine with a pair of genuine Mitsubishi turbo 's, £1,500 direct from Mitsubishi plus fitting.
Car was always quick, now it pulls like a train
No point going hybrid unless your going fbo.
Mines running 385bhp & that's plenty for me.

How many miles has it done?
If it's got westgate rattle it'll most likely also have some end float on the turbines, so not worth replacing just the actuators.
They could be rebuilt, I was quoted £450 each plus vat but decided to replace them instead.

I suspect the seller new the tubs were on there way out & sold it as they didn't want the expense of replacing them

You can tell him to do the wastegate rod adjustment. Requires a 10mm and a 4mm wrench to tighten the wastegate a tad bit

This. Adjust the wastegate arm on the back turbo, and put the spacers in the front turbo....problem solved.

One way to lessen this annoyance is with MHD "wastegate rattle fix" i would only used this if its only a rattle and no other symptoms though.

Previous owner of mine replaced the turbos with standard ones. and its happy running 400bhp with supporting mods.

If i was to go to the hassle of replacing turbos myself and going to keep the car for a while i would definitely put some hybrids in instead. Especially looking at the recent options from Littco. you can easily run hybrids on a standard car, just would need a remap to suit. No need for FBO, unless chasing higher power figures.

What is the difference between stock turbos and hybrids?

Hybrids are modified stock turbos and let you make a lot more power, usually you can see up to 650-750bhp with most hybrid options with supporting mods
