Shipping from US via USPS

Just FYI for those ordering from the US (such as Tischer)...my experience may be a reasonable guestimate on how long customs/shipping delay to expect via USPS:

USPS Tracking
Electronic Shipping Info Received, March 09, 2009
International Dispatch, March 13, 2009, 10:55 pm, FOREIGN CENTERJERSEY CITY NJ 099
Arrived Abroad, March 17, 2009, 10:50 am, CANADA
Into Foreign Customs, March 17, 2009, 10:50 am, CANADA

Canada Post Tracking
2009/03/09 International item mailed in origin country
2009/03/13 International item has left the origin country and is en route to Canada
2009/03/17 International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs
2009/03/20 International item released from Customs for processing by Canada Post

Keep in mind that some vendors (like Tischer) only do a mail run to the USPS office once a week. So that may add to other delays. So gotta keep patient on orders.

Anyone else want to share tracking/shipping estimates/tracking information from the US for the benefit of others?

UPS from Tirerack.com

Ordered on a Tuesday, shipped Weds., arrived in Point Roberts, WA on Saturday AM. Picked up at noon. Standard shipping charges.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the expected duty on wheels would be? I would assume GST + PST + Duty. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Thanks.

Duty on foreign made tires or wheels are 6% I believe. 0% duty if they are made in North America. And yes plus GST and PST.

What kind of wheels/tires are you getting?

Install is tomorrow; I'll post up some pics after I've had a chance to wash off a months' worth of dirt.

Until then, it's a secret

they don't always charge you duty even if they're made outside of NA...I guess sometimes they're just too lazy to check where they're made.

I think I wasn't charged duty when I went to pick up Rays ITC (made in Japan) at Point Roberts. And pretty sure no duty when I picked up the Rota SVN (made in philipine)

Yeah...sometimes they don't ask where it is made. And they just don't charge you the duty. Rare tho. Depends on the customs officer. But if they ask where it is made...you have to tell them the truth.

I once told them a computer keyboard I bought was made in the US (it was an old-style IBM clone). They didn't believe me because they think all electronic/computer stuff is made in China (which it generally is) and made me pop the trunk so they could inspect it for themselves.

Not asking where it's made is rare? I rarely get asked that question actually...i dunno. And last week when I picked up the RE01R tires (made in japan), no duty again.

I know!!

But trust me, the wait will be worth it, and when I actually tell you how much I paid in taxes/duty at the border, you'll laugh

Why not just go down to the US and get them put on down there? much less hassle then waiting for shipment...plus its a road trip!

Gonna be interesting explaining why you've got 4 wheels in the back seat / trunk of your car...

My CDV (this fits in an envelope) took 2x longer to ship from Toronto to Van than 4 rims did from Nevada to Point Roberts. Just luck of the draw sometimes

USPS is great. No brokerage fees.

Do NOT use UPS.

FedEx is also pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as UPS.

Actually USPS/Canada Post does charge a fee. I believe it is $5 or $8. Nothing much but it's still there.

Unless it's built into the shipping charges from the vendor, I've never paid anything sent via USPS / Canada Post.
