Lost all module communication after programming updates
Hello and thank you in advance for any assistance.
I'm a retired general mastertech and I bought an 07 328i at the auction. It had a number of electrical issues that i have been tackling a little at a time. Most recently no sound from the top HiFi audio system. I purchased a used amp and was still having issues so I decided to do some module updating and coding with the autel. When I went into the programming menu I had an option for update all modules so I said what the hell............. big mistake. When I got to the step of downloading the updates, it closed out rather quickly. That was a red flag that it didn't download anything but I let it continue. It went through over an hour of module updates, some successful, most not. When it was all finished the car ran but I have malfunction warnings on everything and the scan tool will not communicate with any modules. I attempted to go back into programming to try to correct this but when attempting this I get the error "Cannot determine vehicle order from Car Access System (CAS)" Any Ideas how to retrieve the vehicle order so it will download the programming? |

Did you attach a power supply the car during coding.
Most everybody here uses Standard Tools and maybe Ista D for diags. Some use Ista P but the warning is always use and Icom cable with it. Download and setup standard tools use Inpa and Ncsexpert to verify and read and recover modules on a module by module basis. There is suppose to be a backup VO in the FRM or CAS. Don't know how to pull it out. Use a free online Vin checker to verify what was installed. Last edited by ctuna; 06-12-2019 at 05:50 PM.. |

Since I did all modules at once, it looks like I killed all backups.
Yes, I had battery charger on at all times and hard wired the VCI. Not sure I understand your instructions. Ista D, ista P, Icom? Last edited by Desi501; 06-12-2019 at 07:32 PM.. |

You could go into bmw vin check and get the options for your car then look them up a search of e90 vo code list will help. First thing I would start with I suppose in your case. Icom is a diagnostic cable and module from bmw inpa insta is the software for programming and diagnostics is what he was saying.
Can you specify your electrical issues your having prior to this it may help point someone in the right direction. |

Thank you. I just ordered nscexpert with a cable. I already have an Autel Maxysys but that's what got me into this mess.
The biggest issue I had was no audio from the stereo system and some other issues like the dash trunk release didn't work but the clicker did. The rear sunscreem was unresponsive but I haven't looked into that yet. It has the double din Nav system which I had to find the right DVD for. I just found a site for the VIN decode but what is lists is all the option packages on the car but no names for the list of modules. |

Standard Tools and Ista D and Ista P is mostly whats used
on this board since both programs are BMW in house programs they are the most compatible. Standard tools is a set of Engineering programs that allow you to change the values or update individual modules. By the way the downloads for this are free. It's recommended you by the bimmergeeks.net cable as its one of the better ones. Programming the whole car is never really recomended if you do you need the more expensive ICOM cable as its the intended cable for a complete up date. diagnostic manual ista/inpa https://bimmerprofs.com/diagnostics-inpa-part-1/ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...xo19teM9vkTF-C https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...7x8H3pN8h1fMuF https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-P-actually-do Bimmergeek.net cable 45 bucks downloads free A recent laptop with plenty of disk space. Win 7 to 10. The options listed in the Vin will tell you what modules are installed beside the obvious basic ones. There are some threads on recovering modules here. I want to thank all that are helping me. I just spent 2 full days trying to install ISTA-P with simply no success. I have downloaded multiple versions and tried to follow installation instructions from various sources but it simply won't install on my Windows 10. I came across some detailed instruction and downloads for ISTA-NEXT and I was able to successfully install it but it does not support programming on my E90. Is there any newbie info out there that I could follow and the best download to use?

Use bimmergeeks.net standard tools/Ista download and only theirs, and follow the instructions they include. They have the easiest setup out of any I've seen.

You guys are awesome.
I'm halfway through the install and ran into an issue. From the toolbox I was instructed to enter c:\windows\syswow64......enter When I open the command under administrator what is already there is c;\windows\system32 and it will not let me change that. What should I be doing? Also, what exactly am I installing when I do this. I'm trying to install ISTA-P. Last edited by Desi501; 06-14-2019 at 05:35 PM.. |

I forgot exactly what that is doing at that stage, but I think if you still get the confirmation after entering the commands they tell you to enter then you should be good. I believe mine was a little different also in that regard and everything worked out for me.
You can also email/call? them and they are usually pretty quick to help out. BimmerGeeks See if this brings them here. |

No, it doesn't work. I am supposed to get a confirmation prompt but instead I get an error message if I try to add the command after the existing command.
From what i can see I am installing the tools package which is nice but what i am trying to install is ISTA-P. The Rheingold link at Bimmergeeks goes to an INST-D download. Where should I be for some install instructions for ISTA-P. I have downloaded a few different versions of it but cannot get any installed. |

Yes, I bricked almost every module in this car and I'm trying to recover them. Coding won't do it.
My understanding is ISTA-D is for diagnostics and maybe some coding. ISTA-P is for programming firmware. The ISTA+ program does both but is not compatible with "E" series. |

You need to become familiar with Ncsexpert and winkfp.
(both part of Standard Tools) Used for coding and updating individual modules. And Inpa for identifying which modules you can talk to. You may have not bricked everyone just the one it was doing when it crashed. If you open up C: windows directory there should be both a System32 and a Syswow64 directory if you have a 64 bit laptop. The bimmertech instructions say to use the Syswow64 Folder to insert the OCX files. Part of the deal with learning to code is to back up modules and doing one at a time. Doing a wholesale update doesn't usually result in any differences accept some different sounding gongs. |

Yes, I did that but the next step takes me to some entries in the command prompt which I cannot complete.
I bought a disc for ncsexpert that I have not installed yet because I was under the impression that simply coding would not be possible at this stage. I have no communication with any module using the Autel. I thought I would have to recover the firmware with ISTA-P. I was able to install ISTA+ but that does not support programming the E90 |

Have you tried to run ista + it will give you a block
diagram of the internal modules and error codes it may isolate the problem a little. Try doing a search here with the work bricked a lot of stuff will come up. To do stuff on and individual module level you need standard tools working you might need and Icom cable to. If you used he bimmergeeks install you have to have standard tools working before Ista will run at all. |

I'll tell ya, I'm a total newbie to BMW coding and programming. I have been on my laptop for 2 days straight trying to figure this out. I spent 2 days trying to install multiple versions of ISTA-P with no success. I couldn't even get the toolbox totally installed because of command prompt differences from the instructions.

It will cost a little coin, but they can help prevent you from doing more damage that might cost even more coin to fix. |
