E90 NBT Retrofit Complete!

Hi All,

I know I’m late to the whole NBT retrofit party, but wanted to share my experience now I have completed this!

Firstly, I have to say a massive thank you to the emulator supplier. Right from me asking many many questions before ordering, through to me being a complete numpty on programming/coding, they have been sensational. I’ve added a picture of the emulator used as I’m not sure I can link directly to their website.

I sourced the rest of the parts from eBay. I met some fantastic sellers during this process, many of whom were big BMW fans and couldn’t do enough to help.

For cables, I mainly used eBay sellers based in China, and apart from the Y cable for the touch controller, I was impressed with the quality (loose wire in the crimp - easy fix).

For me, the hardest part was making up a plug and play loom so the installation would take less time. Fitting the loom in was tight, but after I cut away some of the rear radio plastic cage, there was plenty of room.

I did the install in 2 parts, ran new DAB module/aerial cable and microphone cable in the first part, then once all the parts had arrived, installed everything else. I would say this took about 10-12 hours in total, but I really took my time.

Once coded, the difference between the factory CIC and The NBT is night and day. So much quicker and more modern looking, especially with the touch controller. It feels a more up to date interior even though it’s now 11 years old.

I know that there are alternatives to this now, Android units and MMI modules, but I wanted to go OEM and maybe once I have figured out the Logic 7 echo amp issues, I might investigate an ID6 unit!

Anyway, just wanted to share my experiences!

Thanks for looking.

Mark

Looks fantastic!

I'm hoping to do the same, move from CIC to NBT. Just bought an MMI to tide me over but do want to go full OEM.

What do you think your overall cost is?

Cheers

I reckon it cost around £800. I collected the parts over serval months as and when they came up on eBay. The emulator was the biggest expense, but worth every penny, especially given the help I got from them and the fact I can upgrade to an ID6 unit in the future.

That's actually pretty reasonable! I think I'm going to start looking out for the bits, and will probably go with the same emulator since you had such a good experience !

Hopefully all the links work! It goes without saying that if you want the best price, you will have to search second hand sites often and be patient as you can get some great deals. This is why it took me so long to collect all the parts.

Hope this helps.

can I ask how you mounted the touch controller?
I'm working through the same retrofit currently and as the E9X and the F series touch controller have different lugs, bar making a 3d printed part the options aren't clear.

I can physically get it to fit the gap after trimming a small part of the controller trim

thank you

thank you
I got a thin bit strip of metal, bent it around the controller and drilled out where it crossed the existing trim mounting screw holes.

Really not pretty, but it works!
