What coolant hoses should i check before traveling? And what spare hoses do you guys recommend keeping? I don’t want to destroy my car lol i have new tires and new coolant running through it, anything else to check before leaving?

If you haven't replaced the plastic coolant outlet in front of the engine you better do it with a metal one. Upper radiator hose and the thin hose that goes over the radiator into the expansion tank are the common failure parts. A tow truck ride would cost a lot more than changing them

I drove from Washington -> San Diego, CA, stayed in San Diego for a month, then drove San Diego, CA -> Austin, TX a few months ago. Serviced my cooling system right before I left Washington. After leaving San Diego I stopped at a gas station right off the I-8 before Yuma. Put the pump in and went into the small servo store. After coming out I saw a pool of water on the ground and heard hissing. Opened the hood and the plastic bleeder screw literally sheared in the coolant reservoir. The head of the screw shot off and the threads were still in the coolant reservoir, causing coolant to shoot out the top with any pressure in the engine. Un-operable, especially in that heat. Had it towed to an Autozone nearby and replaced the screw with a new one in the parking lot there. Luckily they had the part and I had tools with me, backed the threads out and replaced, refilled coolant, bled system, then proceeded onwards. Pretty sure it was the 105+ F heat as well as possibly over tightening/overfilling coolant a tad. Not to mention the original plastic bleeder screw from 11 years ago!


My 2 cents with the only issue I ever had on the N51 after 1000s of miles of long mileage roadtrips.

Another vote for these. I've had all 3 break just by looking at them wrong. Those plastic parts are so brittle.

Also might not be a bad idea to do the coolant bottle as well, mine developed a split at the seam and when that happens it just gushes coolant.
