Car spurting at 4K at WOT

Hi Guys,

Cars been acting weird lately. At WOT the car is shuttering pretty bad. I have a custom Wedge tune from Ken he mentioned something about fuel PSI drop ( which happens at 4 k) see my log, the car also stubles a little at idle lumpy like I have cams?

Does the "Load request 235"have anything to do with it, I was looking at some older logs and the ""Load request 225" was lower PSI was the same and fuel pressure did drop ( 2339)? Just a little worried a few times the car has sputtered? Thank you

First tune version
Lower load request- Rail mean 2339- PSI 19.6 peak RPM 3416
http://www.datazap.me/u/anmvq/log-14...0&data=3-10-11

Current tune version
Higher load request rail mean-1856 PSI 20.1 peak RPM 3729

Some side notes car has over 60k and no idea on when or if the plugs have been changed, nor do I know about any walnut blasting being done. Plugs and blasting is getting done on Friday, plugs will be the NHK's gapped at .018. I also don't ever to get or drive the car hard. Mostly stuck in traffic, I got to push it a few times the last week and this has been happening the crazy thing is it's not all the time, just not sure what it could be. I did notice after I drive it hard for a few minuets when letting it cool down I noticed the exhaust smeeled weird like burning paper, first thing I thought of was burning carbon? Hard to describe sorry :/

I had similar issues to like yours, the car sputtered when WOT around 3-4k in 3rd and 4th. are you running E85? you might have a weak pump, not all pumps are created equal or it could be your plugs. Get a datalog of the car sputtering and send it to Ken. He solved mine right away nothing to worry about.

I'm running pump, I just emailed him and asked to pull back on the onset ( which I don't understand what that is)

And after I get the stuff done on ,Friday if it's still doing it I'll change the tune with what Ken sends me, I'm going to drive tomorrow with the cable and my tablet hooked up and see if I get get a log of it

Plugs will probably be a big help. While you're at it (since it's no extra labor on your part) you might seriously consider doing ignition coils, too. I just bought a set for $160 new off eBay, and while the "right" approach might be to let them fail one at a time, I'm getting the feeling that these tunes are pretty hard on the ignition system and that doing everything in one fell swoop should eliminate most common issues.

Just to mirror your experience a little, I've had "hesitation" issues with my car ever since I replaced my boost solenoid -- old one was tired and I was "only" boosting to stock levels. Ever since I changed it, whether on Ken's maps or the OTS MHD maps, I get hesitation or surging under WOT. Very non-linear. Ken's first suggestion was gapping down my Bosch plugs to .018, and after getting misfires at WOT, to go NGK 95770 gapped to .018. Haven't had a misfire yet, but the thing is still not smooth under load no matter what map I'm on. So I ordered new Delphi coils and will be installing them next week and praying that gets me back to a "like new" feel, otherwise I'm not sure what my next steps are. For what it's worth, had a JB4 on my car for 30k miles, MHD for the past 2k, and sitting at 41k overall.

Random...is there anyway you could please ask for before/after pics on your walnut blasting??? Everything I've seen/read has shown that walnut blasting is not something that needs to be done with the frequency like it is on N54s. From what I've seen, it looks like 80-100k mile intervals might be all that's needed on these motors, nothing like the 40-50k on the N54s...good luck, buddy.

Thanx for the info man, you might be right about th coils it would be a ruff task to get coils by Thursday OVN shipping would kill me. I'm definitely going to ask to take pics before and after the walnut blasting as I'm interested to how it looks in there.

Other then the sputter the car is very smooth when accerating, I only have some light surging when I'm at part throttle and idling forward or backwards :/ but I've had that since I bought it, I've heard the surging is caused from th carbon build up tho. Really the car pulls smooth and drives good except the recent sputter, I was just dealing with the surging till I my apt, had to make it six weeks out and only had the car since Dec.

Nope -- that's for the N54. The Delphi GN10571 is the one you're looking for:

https://www.1aauto.com/bmw-ignition-...1/i/deerk00070

You might also consider doing a trial of Amazon Prime, ordering after doing 1-2 day shipping, then cancelling. Honestly, though, the plugs are the biggie so it's not a big deal if you only do the NGKs. Like anything else it's a process of elimination.

Ok got a log of it doing it,

A few things I see is timing corrections about -8.31 and fuel pressure drops to 1540.09 and AF is 14 at 3k? Also noticed my peal position is 100% but the throttle is 68%? Why would the throttle be closing?

I've been getting a slight hesitation/sputter when I really get on the gas. I'm hoping it might just be the plugs. I need to get the MHD monitoring software and get a log.

Your rail pressure is crashing, email Ken your logs so he can adjust your tune for you.

Is that also why the throttle is closing?

Looks like a torque limiter caused your throttle closure. Ken will sort all of this out for you.

^^^ Thanx man but Justin looked at my logs to, I have throttle closure, lots of timing pull, rails crashing, and over boosting, loys of things going on. Looks like a tune issue. I was dangerously lean, took the tune off and went back to my stock PPK for now.

So after the carbon cleaning, plugs and HPFP overall the car feels a hell of a lot better.
No more surge when idleing forward,no part throttle shutter, when now I start the car in the morning or when it's cold it starts "clean" meaning before I always had this kinda like knock or clunk right after it started never new what it was but it's now gone. And it just seems to pull a lot smoother than before and seems to have more power. This is compared obviously to PPK before and not my custom tune. I'll have more on the tune and the things that need to be revised next weekend. I'm hoping to have an updated tune from Ken this week but I have an apt at the dealer Saturday and don't want to flash back and forth again, if there are any codes on the car I want the dealer to seek them ( oil issue ) always was pleased to find out I already have the updated coils. I was told I had the updated Delhi coils
