Engine Rattle at low RPM
Hi everyone, my car currently has a rattling noise coming from the engine at low RPM. It all started when the half check engine light appeared after I started the engine. After that, I quickly stopped the car and used the Carly for BMW app to scan for codes. From the description of the codes, i decided to park the car and clean the VANOS solenoids. With some luck, I managed to clear code 2A82, but code 2A7C still appears. The rattle noise still persists, and only occurs at low rpm's, once I press the pedal it seems to disappear. The car is a 2011 BMW 328i n51 w/ xdrive, currently has 62k miles and oil changes have been done every 5k miles. Any tips on what to do next would help a lot, thank you.
Codes: Intake Vanos variable cam control test: 2A82 Intake, cold start: 2A7C; no description as to what can be the cause of this code I took a video of how the car sounds. Video while pressing the pedal Last edited by BMVV3; 12-03-2017 at 12:02 PM.. |

Replace in order and see if the problem is solved before replacing the next item:
1) Intake VANOS Solenoid 2) Clean Exhaust VANOS Solenoid. Replace if you want to 3) Replace both non-return (check) valves 4) Replace Oxygen sensor after the catyletic converter 5) Check Bearing ledge condition and determine if there is a groove. Ideally: Do not clear the fault codes. Download and setup ISTA-D, and do a full scan. Then click "calculate a test plan" and ISTA will tell you what to check. |

Thank you everyone, I will start by changing the Vanos Solenoids. Once I do that if nothing changes, I will most likely take it to my local Indy shop so they can help diagnose the issue. Unfortunately I cleared the codes since I did not have access to ISTA-D. Hopefully it is something that a simple valve or solenoid can resolve *fingers crossed*.

It is the AC compressor Pulley. I pulled the belt off and the noise was gone. I put a shorter belt on and bypassed the AC compressor and the noise is gone. Now I have to decide how I want to fix the compressor pulley.

Is there an update on what the issue was in this case? I seem to have a similar sound, but its intermittent. It comes on, but then will go away maybe 10 minutes later, or after a restart sometimes. I don't have a CEL or any codes, which is weird.
