N55 PR Coil Kit DIY

What’s up guys?! Wanted to put together a quick DIY in regards to PR coils specifically for E Series N55 motors. This install was performed on an E90 2011 335i running an Injen Intake. Speaking to Robert@PR, he did mention this will not work with a stock intake system. These coils are plug and play, meaning they do not require a special driver nor flash for them to function with a stock flash. However, MHD does have a PR coil option you can enable to take full advantage of your investment. To avoid repetition and specifically focus on the coils, I will not go into spark plug replacement, coil removal, etc.. Please refer to the link below for that procedure.

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=826823

Tools needed:
10mm Socket
11mm Socket
Dremel/Cutoff Wheel/Hand Saw.. take a pick
Dielectric Grease
Q Tip

So, getting to the meat and potatoes of this DIY, you have to remove the post in which the stock intake box snaps into place. Folks, don’t be stingy, you will have to remove the entire post. I started off with a hand saw to remove a large portion then finished it off with a dremel and sanding drum attachment. This provides clearance for Cylinder#4 coil pack.

No.

Noo…

YES!!!

Remove the two 11mm bolts securing the fuel rail noted in the picture below.

The next step is optional. After multiple test fits, the harness running along the rail was preventing me from getting a clean view to mount the coils. Remove the vacuum pipe by pinching the collar and lifting up. This will allow you to reposition the harness away from the fuel rail. Again, not necessary, but that’s what I chose to do.

Assemble the ignition coil packs so that the PR logo is facing towards the mounting brackets. Hardware is provided with the kit. Tighten the bolts using your 10mm socket. Alternate between joining bracket and mounting bracket. See photo below.

Place the coil packs in position and secure using existing fuel rail bolts and 11mm socket. Sorry.. didn’t get this picture.

Now we’re ready for the fun part. I replaced my NGK 95706’s during the install and gapped to .022”. I added the slightest bit of dielectric grease ONLY to the ceramic portion of the spark plug. I also took a Q-tip and applied a light coating of dielectric grease to the inside of the boot. Why? See below..

https://bmw.***********.com/threads/...tion-set.1972/

So, when inserting these plug wires you must hear an audible “click” assuring proper terminal connection. Do not push or pull with the blue portion of the wire; only the boot (black portion). After telling myself “That should be good”, I went back and pushed down just to find out 4 out of 6 were not seated correctly. Best method was to use both thumbs and pressing firmly at the top of the boot. It’s been a 2 weeks and I haven’t experienced a misfire so I’m calling it good.

Take the opposite end of the spark plug wire and connect it to the corresponding coil pack.

The PR plug-n-play harness follows the same wire color scheme as stock. Line up and snap in place.

Connect the opposite end of harness to the corresponding coil pack.

You will notice that the clearance on the Injen Intake is a bit tight, but it works! Reassemble everything and don’t forget to enable the dwell option within MHD.

My thoughts? Noticeably the car is much smoother overall in regards to drivability. Even with cold start enabled, the car idles great in the mornings. Power delivery is much more linear throughout the power band. I did not notice a gain in power I would call noticeable. I took virtual dyno’s before and after using the same road, same flash, etc. and did not see a difference. I don’t want to end in that note, certainly would purchase these again given the outcome.

So what do these coils do different excuse my ignorance. Because my car is running smoother i mean thats pretty subjective. My car runs super duper smooth with stock coils.. idk how much smoother you can get and what does that mean exactly ?

Mainly those having to run shorter gap due spark blowout at high boost levels. Obviously these are far more powerful than stock coils. This is by far an overkill for a stock turbo or even stage1/2 hybrid turbos. I was running NGK N20 @.022" and would get hesitation in the lower RPM's targeting 24psi on my PS2; that's all gone now with no changes in my BEF.

I was being fully transparent in the fact that I did not feel any change in my "butt dyno" or VD's. Perhaps guys running ST N54's experienced a difference in power. Honestly didn't bother to look it up. I needed replacement coils, why not upgrade?

Full details can be found on the PR website.

I have this installed also. You can flip the coil pack the touches the intake to get a better clearance. I didn't have any issue with my BMS intake.

You're right, you have to flip just the coil by the intake, I decided to flip all the coils.

My guess is clearance? stock airbox would probably be in the way of Cylinder#4 coil

Orteeze, Nice write up. Quick question? Were you able to fit the tray that handles the wires that go across the engine?

I have the BMS intake as well. What did you do with the bottom part of the air box since you have to buzz off that post it mounts to. Asking since the BMS intake clips to the bottom of the air box.

What did you guys do with the three wire bundles at the back without having the heat shield to clip them too?

Overall you're both pretty happy with it and not having any problems?
