Jumped timing on n54?
Hey everyone, my 335xi recently went for a shit, really choppy idle and long cranked to start with wicked misfires.
I had a local mechanic take a look at it and they came to the conclusion that my timing chain had jumped a tooth and was now running out of timing. They quoted me 9800 to do just the timing chain and upwards of 18 grand to fix the valves and such if it decided to bend them. I personally have never heard of an n54 jumping timing before. But any thoughts? |

Run away from that shop. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You can source a good engine and have it installed for half the price their asking for the timing chain which in it self is a joke. Is this even a legit question???

Also did they provide proof of diagnostics at all? Codes, etc?

I thought I have seen where our crank hub can move causing timing issues.https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1307143

Yeah I kinda figured so, they were saying they would pull the whole motor just to do the chain and check the head and valves.

Doubt it jumped timing but if it did and their is engine damage such as bent valves/damaged pistons ect ect . Used motor is the best/cheapest route. Depends where you live but anywhere from 4-5K with the motor and install sounds reasonable

The joke went over your head, I'm saying 18k for a repair is way much more you'll get from a totaled 335

I mean a direct engine swap, including install, (like someone else said) costs at most 5-6k. But I wouldn't proceed until you get codes. For all you know, it's a simple fuel/ignition issue that they're tryna take advantage of
