Brakes "sticking"
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to this forum, but have enjoyed the knowledge base, and the information.
I think I may be having a brake "problem". When braking moderately hard, the pads seem to 'stick' to the rotors. If I brake moderately hard and come to a complete stop, I can release the brake pedal and it feels like it 'pops' off the rotor. There's a split second after I release the pedal that the car won't move and then the pads release and the car will move under idle. The other symptom is under steady pedal pressure (normal braking), the brakes will brake as they should then, with no change in pedal pressure, they'll brake with more force. Strange... any ideas? Thanks in advance! EDITED: to correct grammer and spelling errors... maybe now someone will understand my problem! Last edited by boyce'06 330i; 12-06-2006 at 10:48 PM.. |

the cars are do sometimes grab the brakes just a bit - which is perfectly normal. One of the features of the cars is that it will automatically dry off the brakes if they are wet, and i've found many times that the brakes to stick just a bit, which i notice at very slow speeds a lot. I'm not sure though for you, if its normal

Thanks for the reply!
I took the car in this morning to have them check it out. The other troubling thing about the brakes is the pedal travel is such that anything but the lightest braking causes the brake pedal to drop under the level of the throttle pedal causing inadvertent throttle application under moderate to heavy braking (just when you DON'T need to accelerate!). And in general the pedal seems soft. I did the 'bed-in' procedure listed in another thread last night and it has almost eliminated the sticking problem... at least to the point I couldn't recreate it for the brake tech at the dealership. Before the bed-in I could recreate it at will. It did not help the pedal travel or softness of the brake pedal, though. |

I 'bedded-in' the brakes last night and the 'sticking' sensation is gone. The dealership bled the brakes today and all is good now. Pedal is still a little mushier than I'd like, but they say they're operating to spec, so I may have to upgrade to braided steel brake lines!

I have a problem with my brakes squicking just before I come to a complete stop, but it only happens 50% of the time. I have 14000kms.
Has anyone had this problem...is it normal? Will the dealer clean the brakes under warranty with this mileage? |

Are you sure this isn't the "start-off assist"? When I tested an AT 330i, the start-off assist was annoying. Basically, the brakes continue grabbing for a couple of seconds after you release the brake pedal. This is okay for MT on a hill, but feels weird on an AT.

... mostly because I wanted to use the new smiley:
for 'Start Off Assistant' Your brakes are fine. It's the start off assistant in action. If it helps, you get used to it eventually.

Guys, thanks for the responses, but I thought start off assist was only activated on inclines? My issue was happening on flat surfaces and declines.
Anyway, the car is not doing it since I bedded-in the brakes. I think the pads just had some glazing that got sticky under the heat from normal braking but was removed during the bed-in process. |

I thought it was only inclines, too, but on the AT I drove, I noticed it even on flat surfaces. I have never driven an AT E90 except during that test drive, so I don't have a lot of experience with them. However, that was one thing that really stuck out as unusual during the test drive.
