Ghost VIN?
Are there any alternatives to simply paying for a carfax check? Sold my E90 a couple years ago and searching the VIN implies that the car vanished after 2017. Just curious as to whether or not it's on the road or in a junkyard somewhere but doesn't seem like it's worth the time or effort.

As someone who's looked into this for certain cars you're probably just better off searching it on CarFax. There's alternatives that you let run a report for like $10.

Besides free, it's got some great information that Carfax doesn't show (and it's missing service detail CarFax does have) But something it did have for my 2011 M3: - 32 images of my car for sale at a dealer at different times in it's life at dealers And the sales price for those sales Missing - was my purchase of the car in 2021 and it's sale price So between CarFax and Vehicle History, combined you'll get a pretty good, but not totally complete history summary still great information!

got too excited.... just ran my 2008 E92 and it only has it's vehicle specs, and none of the sales or service history that CarFax has
Same result for my 2005 ZHP Still a resource I will use in the future combined with CarFax

Mycarfax (a seprate partition of carfax) has a free thing where you can put in a VIN and it will show you service history. I've tried it on a few random cars I've sold and missed and you could see that they were still being serviced and what state they now live in

Sounds like all 3 of the recommended sources together might possibly give you a reasonable history. But not always, my 335xi had no service data other than vehicle registration

Never mind - the website was down when I looked yesterday. Plugged in my cars VINs and found a lot of info about their sales history and so forth. Actually a really nice website!
My 850i doesn’t return much though - no pics or sales history. Not surprising since I believe each of its sales were through private parties, so keep that in mind. |
