First off, let me make it clear that I never plan to do the following, but:

Theoretically, could one fill up with 87 octane regular fuel, and mix in e85 gas for extremely low cost 93-95 octane? To me it would make sense, the user running a tune of course. Opinions please...

Sure, why not. Although all the tunes for e85 are based off 92 and not 87.

Yes, but your 'ultra low cost fuel' would lower your fuel mileage. e85 has less energy per gallon therefore needs to burn more in order to get the desired effect. Doing this would do little to nothing in terms of money saving.

Unless the combined cost is about 25% less, its not going to save much.

E85 lowers MPG & Regular Gas would be an awful base. You'd have to blend in more E85 to compensate for the lower octane rating of 87 instead of 91, so you'd be putting more E85 into your car (costs less, but more MPG = more trips to the pump).

Using an octane calculator & targetting a "home-made" 94, you'd have to mix ~9 gallons of 87 + ~7 gallons of E85.

IMO, this would be WORTHLESS. The whole idea of using E85 is that you get an octane that is closer to Race Gas (100 octane) -- a 50:50 blend of 91 + E85 gives you 98. Stick to what the majority are doing, run some combination of 91/E85 and aim for an octane that's closer to 100.

***EDIT*** This isn't to say it doesn't have cooling effects and that our engines won't like it...just the opposite. It merely points out that technically, E85 doesn't have an octane rating of 105 even though it may "act" like it does.
