Replaced my faulty CIC, best option to get Nav working?

Hi All,

I've read a thousand posts on different forums, and think I've worked out what I need.

I have a 2009 E92 335i, with CIC & Professional Maps, in Australia. My CIC has been playing up for a while - basically just restarts, runs for 30 seconds to several minutes, rinse & repeat. It doesn't do it all the time - it will work fine for months, then one day will start rebooting. It will do ythis for anything up to several days. The first time it happened, I replkaced the disk with a new mechanical one, and it seemed to fix it. A few months later it started again, so I replaced the new disk with an SSD - once again seemed to be ok for a while. It's now getting worse, and I'm convinced it isn't the disk. I pulled the CIC aprt a few weeks ago, and reseated the internal ribbon cables. It worked fine for 2 weeks after, but this morning started rebooting again.

I've bought a replacement CIC - it came out of a 2011 320D, with very similar options to mine, including Professional Nav. Today I put my SSD disk into the "new" CIC, and installed it in the car. Most things worked, but no Nav, no Bluetooth, and no oil level disply (might have been other things but thats all I noticed.

I connected my notebook, and used WinKFP to read the CAS, then wrote the VO back to the "new" CIC. The CIC powered off then on again, and now Bluetooth works, and I think the oil level will work as well. Nav says "Function currently not available". Everything I read tells me this is to be expected.

I'm after advice as to the best (read cheapest) way to get Nav working again. I believe I can buy an emulator - a hardware device that bypasses the FSC requirement. Is this my best option, and which one do I buy?

If I want to get an FSC code, where would I get this from? Is this a dealer thing? Would I need to supply my own Vasoline (do you even have Vasoline in the US - perhaps KY Gel)? Can anyone else get me an FSC code for NAV? I realise this is different ot the FSC code for updating maps - I have done that to my car previously.

What is Script Activation? Is this the same thing as getting an FSC code?

I've also read about a method of getting the FSC by a file on a USB, but it says this only works on US & EU market cars - mine is an AU model. Can anyone shed more light on this?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't buy new FSC codes. You could use Intel123's CIC Patcher if you're not able to transfer your old FSCs.

That still requires the latest CIC flash right? And map updates seem like a pain afterwards.

Isn't this the fix that only works on US & EU cars? Mine is Australian.

I have ordered an emulator, so will see how that works out when it arrives. Good news is that the replacement CIC seems to have fixed my restarting problem. Just need to get my maps back.

It would require the latest flash, yes. Map updates worked fine for me

Is there a good place to learn about script activation? I just need to buy the icom and do the update.

For anyone doing a CIC swap in the future, I thought I'd post the latest update on my issue.

I received the emulator yesterday - a "plug & play" version with a plug & socket. I installed it, and after starting the engine my Nav changed from "option not available" to "enter code to start nav".

I used the USB method to get an updated 1b.hex file, then the FSC generator program to generate a new FSC code, entered this into the car, and now have working nav happy days.

The emulator was bought from China through Ali Express, and I bought the P&P vesion because I didn't want to cut & join wires. Cost was around $US40 shipped.
