I was considering calling around to a few junkyards to see if they have a wrecked car with a 3 stage IM with low miles. What information should I provide to a junkyard dealer? A part number? I'm afraid that if I say I need a 3 stage IM for a E90 they will have no idea about what I am talking about.

Should I also mention that I need the actuator motor, or do they assume that?

Can't believe I just read 20 pages of questions and answers but still no DIY. I realize some of you have posted your own but I was looking forward to reading THIS DIY because the guy seemed to know his stuff. Oh well, this isn't the first...

If its from a wrecked car theyre just gonna rip the whole thing out. I doubt theyll take the motors off the intake manifold unless they really know the n52

Looks like there is one here for a Z w/ N52. I would imagine the DIY would be the same for an E90 since the engines are the same.

Is there any way to get that manifold for cheaper? Otherwise it really seems like an expensive project-- nice gains, though.

I did it myself and there was nothing tricky. just some pain in the ass hose ends that you gotta squeeze the shit out of to get off. Just once you take off your old one, note all the connections on it and just be sure you reconnect the three stage one in all of those places.. shouldnt take more than a weekend if you work for 4 hours on saturday and sunday. I could probably do it faster now that I know what all tools I need

it was actually fairly simple, following the numerous DIY posts. took me about 4 hours...a shade over 3 for the manifold removal. installing the 3 stage and plugging everything back was quick.

So I'm reading the OP and went to the websites for the parts. It seems that the first item, the Intake Manifold has gone up significantly in price...over a $100 in price. Also, it also seems that our motor (N52) are running the same part#. Is there a specific year and model that we're suppose to be using when ordering the parts?

All of the N52 3-stage intake manifolds should all have the same part number.

So It doesn't matter if the parts are showing up for a 2006 330i or a 2012 128i..if it's the same part# (11617559523) it'll be the 3 stage intake manifold... Just clarifying. Thanks

Yes, but make sure that 128 is and N51. The N52 '28s have just a regular single stage manifold. The part number may differ if you buy a used one. I'm not sure if the manifold has gone through any updates. If it has the older ones will have a different part number, but if you look it up in a parts database it will say it's been superseded with the new one. Either way they all should work.

Ok..so on www.bmwmercedesparts.com, when I did a search for that part#, like I said it came back with a bunch of different years and models. But for this, I would order:

2012 - BMW - 128I - N51B30A - L6 - 3.0L - GAS
FUEL SYSTEM / FUEL INDUCTION / INTAKE / INTAKE MANIFOLD
11617559523 - INTAKE MANIFOLD 128i; Convertible

as opposed to:...

2012 - BMW - 128I - N52B30A - L6 - 3.0L - GAS
FUEL SYSTEM / FUEL INDUCTION / INTAKE / INTAKE MANIFOLD
11617559523 - INTAKE MANIFOLD 128i; Convertible

It should say N51 but that part number is correct.
