I agree on the JB weld fix. My wife had a 95 525i with an Aluminum oil pan and hit one of those concrete parking spot blocks and cracked the pan bad. I repaired with JB weld and she drove it for over a year with no leaks.

You could repair with JB Weld and touch up with Black paint. No need to take the valve cover off either.

It is just like brazing (same technique), but with a big soldering iron and plastic rod. The best results are if you know the type of plastic used for the part.

That's crap.

I would probably clean (brake cleaner), let dry, and then apply a very good quality, high-temp epoxy resin designed for plastic. I'd check it after 3-4 months.

It it just the one crack or are there others?

I've just repaired mine using Q Bond. It's a combination of a powder which you fill in holes or cracks with then drip superglue (included) onto which forms a "as good as new" seal.
Not lost any oil in over 300 miles so hopefully holds

I ended up just replacing mine. I'm taking the old one and repairing it for a spare.

Yeah. If you have it on the bench don't use glue. Solder or weld it.

I just found the same crack. Makes me LOL at BMW. Really? Plastic charge pipe and plastic valve cover????. Regardless, I was getting a p0174 and p0306, misfire cylinder 6 and bank 2 lean. My plugs where soaked in oil when removed due to the oil leaking, could this be the cause of the codes?. Cover and vcg ordered, will replace soon.

Just to the right of the fuel line

I wonder if this is the reason I've been getting p0171 and P0174 fuel too lean. I did see a small tiny seep of oil when I changed my coilpacks.

They all seem to generate from near the internal pcv system. I'd consider making sure your pcv valve is not stuck closed. Before discovering my valve cover cracked I first noticed my RB PCV valve stuck closed. I presume it was this way from the day it was shipped and installed and I never inspected for proper operation prior to install. Lesson learned, a 30 dollar mod "may" have been the cause of an almost 400 dollar repair, no labor since I'm doing it but north of 1k if not. I assume stock PCV valves could do the same so again I'd inspect it.

How do you check a PCV valve? sorry for the noob question. I'm pretty new to BMW's and turbo vehicles.

Also, I'm not sure if this helps any but I accidentally broke my vent hose and noticed there it was pretty oily in there? Is this normal? I went ahead and ordered a new vent hose regardless instead of repairing the broken one.

Follow this, same steps but just installing the stock pcv valve if no issues.
I will make it a priority to update this thread after I swap my vcg and valve cover. I think it will be useful to have a thread that follows up with an owner that actually fixes this issue as there are countless that lead to nowhere.

MY E92 is pissin me off !!!

mine cracked on me awhile back but I didn't know it was cracked I just thought the oil everywhere was comin from a bad gasket but I replaced the plugs and coils cuz of a misfire in cylinder 3 then I found the plugs and coils soaked with oil so I fix the gasket and when I pull the cover I notice a crack in the same location as everyone else's right next to the PCV VALVE its so crazy how they all have broken in the same place !!!!!

so I patched the cover inside and out with JB WELD plastic welder and when I hand tightened the bolts I heard a loud POP sure as shit the crack has re-cracked so I slap another coat on after I torque everything down and I think im in the clear I put everything back together take her for a test ride and soon as I park I check to see how it looks and shes held !!!!
---- but I still couldn't figure why im not building boost and why im still pullin code P0303 i check the coil and plug and everything seems fine then i go back to autozone to get the codes read to see why i still have the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light still on when i see that the code is still the same i pop my hood and check the JB WELD and...... sure as shit its leakin AGAIN !!!!

im disabled so i have very little cash so a new cover isn't in the budget anyone have any DIY ideas for me to try next?????

also if i get the valve cover to seal properly and im still getting a P0303 code and no boost what would be my next step to fix the issue??

THANKS in advance for any help its def appreciated !!! sux being broke and ownin a bmw that's for sure!!!

I changed my cracked valve cover at the same time as I did plugs and injectors. I also changed the spark plug insert bits.

I used the ECS guide for changing the gasket as it's literally all the same

If you buy a genuine cover, it will come with new gasket and bolts too.

From opening the bonnet, to closing the bonnet it took me 4.5hrs.
That included a couple of breaks, trying to find tools, injector coding and retrieving dropped bolts from the under tray.

I reckon it could be done in about 3hrs.

Guys something is really strange here.. These plastic valve covers always crack.. Why has no aftermarket company created a non-plastic is metal version of this...?

I wonder if there is there a flexible sealant that can bond to plastic, rather than using JB weld?
