Ah but AMG has all but ceased the supercharged V8. Of course, they still have the huge displacement advantage (5.5L and 6.2L), and they still have the turbo 12s. And a turbo'd version of the AMG V8 is also rumored too.

We KNOW that a biturbo V8 is in the works to replace the 4.8L. Logic suggests that it'll be a 4.0L, but that remains to be seen. Whatever.

My confusion, however, has alot more to do with what will happen to the current aluminum 4.0L V8, that makes 306hp, that was introduced last year? The 3.0L biturbo is poised to replace it, but I can't see BMW just throwing a new engine away, which is why I think the biturbo V8 will be based on this unit. Then you'd have you 528i, 535i, and a biturbo 545i or something.
I think you have answered the question- the 4.0 V8 engine will get the Bi-turbo to replace the 4.8 V8- it just seems logical, and I have a strong feeling the target market will be the North American market.

The same scenario that we had with the N52 engine getting the biturbo to become the N54 engine
Mind you both the 4.0 litre V8 and the N53( N52 + DI technology) are still being offered outside the US.
So it's not that BMW ie retiring the V8 4.0 litre engine- it would undergo some sort of evolution.
