Deleted 335d - Best tank mileage
It seems all everyone wants to talk about on here are big power and quarter miles....I bought mine (and immediately deleted) to have a "comfy" (Sport suspension + Michigan roads, means rough ride) car that I could get exceptional mileage out of (at the time of purchase, I was commuting 70 miles round trip, to work).
I'm curious what some of you mileage conscience deleted 335d owners are getting or have managed over a FULL TANK? All highway? Speed? Sport or base (ie, tires?) Today I had my best tank, and got me thinking. I've had the car for 30k+ miles (deleted the day I got it home) and have about 8 tanks over 40 mpg, with the best being 41.9. Today, I managed an honest 43 mpg--mostly interstate but 30-40 miles of "city" (not a lot of stop and go) driving. I'm a Sport, running Michelin Pilot Sport AS....rears are about bald. Who has the record? I'm guessing high 40's are achievable with the right patience. Last edited by awenthol; 10-22-2018 at 09:00 PM.. |

The best I have managed is only 33.4mpg over a full tank. Granted, I've only been keeping track over the past 8 fill ups. That was with about 70/30 highway/city driving and being mindful of gas mileage about 80% of the time. Makes me wonder what I'm missing to get closer to 40mpg (or if a long highway trip is the most realistic way to achieve that).

I have gotten 49-50 over a 400 mile circuit, and wrote it up somewhere on e90post a couple years back. Fully deleted, was then running 2.5. I set out to disprove the claim that two guys were able to drive from Chicago to NYC on one tank in a new (stock) 2009 335d which would be 49 mpg to get to 800 miles. What I found was that if you can control your right foot and put a little extra in the tires you can absolutely get 50 mpg. I use Diesel Kleen too.

I tracked mine very closely on a cross-country trip last year and it gets 42 @70mph in nominal conditions. One thing I noticed however is the variance seemed quite large with either increased speed (drops quickly anything over ~70) and weather (headwind). It works out to around 30 @90mph.

Temperature also makes a difference. In Aug I drove from FL to MI and averaged 32-33mpg when the temp outside was mid 90's. After it cooled to 60's at Indiana I averaged 38mpg.

I was wondering if anyone would question my claim to cruising at 90. After getting passed by a Kansas State Trooper running 85 on I-70 west, 90 seemed pretty comfortable - just wasting alot of fuel, for a little time saved.

Lifetime fuel consumption for my car. Some of the really low MPGs were city driving and only partial tanks (I have a habit of "cutting my losses") |

Hotter the better for a diesel. This is why the guys in Florida can rip off great mileage. Flat and hot.

Almost every engine performs more efficiently with lower temps. Especially Turbo'd.

335D E91 6 speed manual conversion does 36 mpg cruising at around 90 mph, 70 mph does 42 mpg, town driving 30 mpg. all combined about 35 over all. the manual swap din't really make any difference to the fuel consumption.

Engine temp low = bad
Intake / charged air cooler temp low = good

My 335d is bone stock and I average 29.7mpg with a mix of 50% freeway at 75-80mph and 50% in the city at 35-40mph stop n go. Someday I may go deleted to improve the performance/fuel mileage.

Ambient air temps play a huge role in the efficiency of diesels. Hotter the better if all you're after is mileage.

My mileage figures since deleting: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/335d/2...ehentdi/858152
600 mile tanks aren't much of a struggle. If I could keep out of the accelerator (nope, lol), then low 40s tanks wouldn't be a problem. I've done a few steady-state 50 mile trips where the car returned 45 mpg.
