US vs EU Spec N57

Hi everyone,

I had a quick question about the differences between the US vs EU spec N57 engine.

Long story short my timing chain skipped on my 2015 F15 X5 diesel (64000 miles) with the N57 engine and the engine is now knocking. I have been trying to source a used engine within the US but it is proving to be tough.

My question is, (and I understand the emissions/ECU/wiring harness may and will be different among other things) are the short and long blocks from a US vs EU spec engine the same? In other words, if I purchased an N57 engine from Europe or the UK and strip all the emissions stuff and wiring harness and replace it with all that stuff from my current engine, would that work?

I have a feeling the engines mechanically are exactly the same and that only the emissions/wiring and ECU related stuff is different which can be swapped in.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Nice find, appreciate you sharing because I could not find any in the US. I am still waiting to hear back from BMW if they would possibly replace under warranty (my SA is going to fight to have it replaced) even though the car is not under warranty or will likely just buy this motor.

Thanks!

How common is this issue? Do these motors require a timing service?

You might check into buying a totaled US F15 X5 for less than $5500. Good luck.
