2006 e90 water pump
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Do the (updated) pumps look the same as the old ones, or different? Certain serial numbers affected? Also, do the newer water pumps have that same fault, or has it been corrected in the revised design? Thanks fellas. |

I checked mine last year to determine it was original. I think mine was metal and the new ones are black plastic. There is a DIY on one of the forums that show pics of new and old parts side by side. Once you see the pics it is pretty obvious.

If I had a 2006 325/330 or 2007 335 with the original, I would definitely change it as a prevention. Less sure about a 2007+ N52N; I haven't heard of any case involving a 328i so far.
In the mechanical maintenance sub-forum, eninty reports that the WP gave some BMW FC codes a long time before failing. Last edited by Saintor; 07-29-2011 at 09:03 AM.. |

I just changed mine (DIY). The two versions of the pump on the outside look the same. The best way to tell is to just look at the mounting bolts. If the pump was replaced and new bolts used (as the procedure calls for) the new bolts WILL NOT be blue-headed (the bolts from the original factory build are blue-headed - i.e. one-time use only). The new bolts that come with the bolt kit are similar to the original bolts from the factory but do not have the blue head that indicates they are one-time use only. I guess BMW realized the wather pump mounting bolts aren't all that critical and don't really need to be replaced when a new pump is installed. Also check the casing and see how pitted the aluminum is compared to other aluminum parts. If the pump was replaced recently it will look newer than the other components.
Lastly, look for the wire harness that plugs into the pump. About 2 inches from the plug there should be a wire loom securing clip where the wire loom is cliped into. The clip is stainless steel and clips onto the pump casing to secure the wire harness from moving around. I'd bet a lot of mechanics will forget this little detail and do not transfer the holding clip from the old pump to the new pump and the wireharness will be hanging free. If the thermostat was replaced it will be dark plastic. The original t-stats were aluminum. Last edited by ENINTY; 07-30-2011 at 07:04 AM.. |

I stand corrected. Only the new style thermostat is plastic. The pumps look the same. New vs. old pics. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347412

I just bought a water pump two days ago and installed it. It was brand new and metal. All N52 engines use the same water pump doesn't matter if it's LCI or pre-LCI, doesn't even have to be an e90. You can literally take the water pump off any x3, x5, z4, 128i, and it will work for your car as long as it's an N52. N54s have more powerful water pumps that won't work on N52s at least I don't think, but same thing there, all the same water pump whether it's a 535i, 135i, or 335i. I think N52 is 200 watts and N54 is 400 watts someone correct me if I'm wrong about the wattage.

Check out Oebimmerparts for much better pricing from the exact same manufacturer. ECS is great when they have stuff in stock and you can't get it elsewhere, but as far as price - they're pretty high. Oh, 78,000 - original. |
