jtodd_fl Incorrect good sir. A whale by itself describes neither the female or male gender.

Thus, Smoosh's statement is still correct and not sexist since the term whale does not identify sex. The good doctor's partner (whether that partner is a male or female) may still be a whale.

For those who are old enough to remember - the TV shows "Hogan's Heroes" and "M.A.S.H." had a similar effect on many veterans from WW2 and Vietnam. HH made the Nazis seem like harmless bumbling fools, and MASH made the Americans seem like harmless bumbling fools. Both were comedies, made about situations and events that many saw as sacred, where they experienced death and destruction.

Maybe because those events only affected those who were there?
Maybe because those shows aired after a longer period of time had passed?
Maybe because while those shows ultimately made people money, it wasn't an obvious attempt to profit from those events?
Maybe because back then, America wasn't hyper sensitive like it is now?

I'm not sure of the difference and while i agree with what you're saying, i still find this ad to be crude while not being offended at all by HH or MASH.

Maybe it was because those shows were entertaining.

They are also different contexts. One tried to find something humorous in and around a horrific event. They did not really mock it. It was not about them events themselves, but about things happening in relation to the events. MASH clearly dealt with some of the horrors that happened there... HH was more of a farce and it was less bad because they could have left if they wanted. Also, a TV show offers screen time to give perspective. The differences may be subtle, but they make a HUGE difference.

I'm not sure what is more offensive, honestly. ~1,500 people died on the Titanic yet this can be rented for your kid's next birthday party:

It's tasteless at best. I didn't lose anyone in 9/11, but I did walk out of 2 WTC that day (I had been working there since 97). Some things you just don't use as a marketing gimmick - the deaths of over 3000 people is one of them.

First, let me say that I agree with you that this is in equally poor taste. Second, as far as people's visceral reactions go, I think there are some differences that make those reactions different.

- First, the Titanic disaster happened much longer ago. No less tragic, but time heals all wounds, as they say.
- Second, the Titanic tragedy was an accident, not a violent act of murder. This matters in how people respond to it.
- Lastly, the circumstances that brought about the Titanic disaster have been largely fixed and it is a symbol of past failing, not current dangers. The circumstances that caused the deaths of the victims of 9/11 are still very much here today, if not worse.

Again, that does not make the Titanic any less bad and does not make that slide any less distasteful, but those are a few reasons why people respond differently to the two scenarios (potentially).

"Someone sounds like they're married to a whale"

is by slang term is regarded as married TO a woman, not a male,

"a shark married a whale"

of course you are right a whale is male/female, but in the context of the post, it is in fact correct

Well, it wasn't very funny when Hawkeye killed the "chicken" on the bus so the enemy wouldn't hear them! Wait, did I just reveal a spoiler?

It's all fun and games until someone chokes their chicken.

That video makes me sick. 9/11 will never be a laughing matter. I'm sure everyone here remembers that day vividly, regardless of state of residence.

I met a guy that ran a hedge fund out of one of the towers that fell. He was dropping his kid off at school when the planes hit. 95% of the people that worked for him died that day.

Yes, but slang is effectively a number of people either misusing a word or attributing a meaning to a word that would not otherwise be present...and doing this so repetitively that society effectively accepts it.

Therefore, I believe slang is an offensive word to someone like jtodd_fl and I take great delight in making little corrections to his statements since we know someone of his stature would never stoop to using slang.

Emoticons, yes, but slang - never.

MASH premiered in Sept 1972 - we were in Vietnam until 1975.

Maybe it's because the hippie generation was so self-absorbed that they didn't care who they offended... And many people were offended.

Yes - this ad is crude and inexcusable. I think I read that they are now out of business. Good riddance.

Of course the Korean Conflict, where MASH took place, ended in '53, but.... Yeah. Otherwise, solid rebuttal.
