E90 320i 2007 smoking when accelerating

Hi guys,

Need some help or someone to help me fix my car as it's smoking when left idling for sometime and moving. Poor cars behind me slowdown as smoke comes out when sitting in traffic and moving. The car is N46 engine.

Can anyone help me? Is there a mechanic here in the forum who could give me an estimate? I'm from Sydney btw..

Upon searching around.. I believe these must be valve stem seals which have worn out

Could be too much engine oil in the car? I read somewhere that smoke could be caused by too much engine oil too.

Hey bud,
Thanks for your reply.. but twice it has happened that I got a warning on dashboard that my oil is low so I had to top it up with a liter of oil each time.

I was under the same assumption. But I got my oil changed last night and went on a trip today and when I was returning back, the low oil warning came up..

Do the valve stem seals, these cars all fail. Be prepared for around a $2K bill through a main dealer though.

Smoking engine could be a range of things. What color is the smoke? White is steam and blue smoke is oil. How is your coolant levels

The smoke is white in color. However, there is no coolant loss or milky white stuff in engine oil

Just a note on n42, n46 and n46n, these ALL and I mean absolutely all shit valve stem seals. I've seen them at 40k and above. It's 110% absolutely a matter of when and not it.

What happens is the vss simply go hard and fail.
I've seriously been involved with about 30 at least.

If you leave it, you will also 100% destroy the cat in the car which are stupidly expensive genuine.

2k would be an absolute bargain, I would be super surprised if someone could do a full job for that money considering the parts alone cost close to that.

Moreover the process is remove head, full service and replace valve stem seals. Also replace all timing gear, chain, guides etc while in There as they also fail.

There after it's like a new engine and enjoy many more years of use.

2nd hand motor will have the exact same issue soon after if not already done. The issue is a shame as it's otherwise a decient motor once the typical bmw special leaks are sorted, in all the usual places.

My valve stem seals were done without removing the head, but yes you do need the cam locking tool.

How much did it cost you? And from where did you get it done?

Never seen an n54 do vss mate. They probably could but as far as I know it's not a commom at all.

On the n42, n46 and n46n it's as guaranteed as the sky is blue.

Anyone proposing to pull the valves from the top to simply replace vss and do nothing else... really not sure as to what would be an appropriate comparison. Anyone considering that option should probably speak to an engine builder first for some professional advice. 1 look at the condition of a head, chain and guides in There things tells the story and if 80% of the Labour is done...

A backyard mechanic did it for me. BMW quoted me about $2200 + GST from memory. It was for an 2005 320i.
