I may reinstall my stock muffler and delete my mid mufflers with pipes.
Which borla muffler do you have ?

I highly recommend listening to it with good headphones, a sound bar, in your car, etc. A phone speaker really won't give anywhere near an accurate portrayal of the sound.

Do you have pics of your final piping of the muffler ?

Hey guys,

I did a muffler delete a few months ago, however I only took out the muffler at the back before the tips. The sound is very good and natural, and not too loud (I can attach a vid later for anyone interested).

Thanks.

Good day,

I've managed to do the mod.

I followed Cobramarty's tips.

I'm very lucky that I have Good friend at Pitstop, Garage here in Christchurch, he was surprised at how good the sound was.
In 20 years replacing mufflers on vehicles. This was something he had never done.

[IMG][/IMG]

Also had the Resonator removed few weeks back. This alone deepens the exhaust sound

The overall result is a subtle crackle and the very odd pop. But it's certainly not tin can raspy.

The resonator was placed in the skip ages ago. I see that these go for a bit of cash.

Also discovered it after it was disposed.

I'm here in NZ shopping metal out would cost a shit load.

Here's a link I posted a video of the sound on the e90 FB group.

I haven't seen the insides of 330i mufflers anywhere so I found this and thought Id throw it up.

Swapping my brothers 328 to the stock 330 there is a bit of a sound increase. Only difference I can see here is the perforation att the end of the 1 pipe before the tip(which would reduce sound)

Guys, I’m looking to more or less keep the stock exhaust tone (don’t want to make it deeper or rumbly or anything like that especially at low RPMs) but with just a little more noise especially higher up.

Is secondary cat removal enough on its own?

You ran the stock muffler with just the resonator removed? Was it slightly deeper than stock? I've been thinking about removing the resonator on my 328i and leaving the rest of the exhaust stock. I'd like it to be slightly raspier or deeper but stock volume. Maybe a bit more of a tone. Seems like everyone on here says to not bother removing the resonator because it won't change the sound at all, but they are also the same ones saying a muffler delete isn't very loud.

Hi,

Even removing the resonator is a easy job. There is not al lot sound difference with it. I find that once it's removed the car has a deeper softer sound. When you put the foot down and the revs go up the exhaust sound is noticeable.

I'm thinking about 15/20% louder.

I would open the muffler first. Try what's been described above. You will have a nice sounding car. If you again want it to be louder again. Remove the resonator.

I'll see if I can upload a drive by as requested above.

Now that the exhaust is so loud, it's pretty cool driving in tunnels, slipping it in to neutral and giving it snot for a sec and watch the reverb echo out.

Let us know how you get on.

I could see the perforations looking into the back of the tail pipe.

So the two pipes come from the centre chamber.

When the exhaust valve is closed. The fumes go through the perforations into the larger chamber and I guess back around.

Interesting..... :

So did you also cut them out?

I actually haven't opened the 330i ; we just swapped the 330i exhaust resonator back onto my brothers 328i. Actually made a decent difference although secondary cat delete is next.

Here is another image I found. It actually seems closer to the PE than to the 328 ones.

I am absolutely dying to know...how does one weld the underside of the tubes within the muffler with only the top of the muffler shell cut off? There is not way to get to the bottom to weld it.

I just cut out another section on the bottom on mine. The entirety of my muffler looks like its got a million stitches but you'd only be able to tell if you looked for it

That's what I thought people would have to do. But all the other pics I only see the top cut off. And I'm thinking not everybody cut out their bottoms. But maybe they did. ??

I must say that for regular driving and long trips I would like to keep the stock, super quiet muffler. But I would love to get some sound every once in a while. I took a look at exhaust cutout valves and might go that route.
