Doesn't work. Nothing you show in the guide is the same for me! My timing pin doesn't even fit in the hole! my cams will NOT line up to install the holder!

@mark458 Must be user error if you have a N54 it will be the same thing. if the pin to lock the flywheel doesn't fit you must not be a Top death center. once on TDC make sure the rear camshafts are the same as the picture check with a mirror.

You don't understand. The pin is what 3 inches long? Well I cant get more then 1/8th of an inch in without forcing it! Its not even clearing the block! And if I get the exhaust cam at 12 then the intake cam is at 1.

If I twist and force on it for 3 or 4 minutes I can get it 3/4th of the way in.

What is the reason for you doing this? Did you car skip timing? if it did you won't alight a TDC. Can you confirm your car is at TDC i am not sure if its TDC compression but the rear should look like this.

Also always rotate the crankshaft clockwise don't rotate the otherway.

and your rear camshafts look like the pic below?

Take my advice as advice always consult the bentley book or a mechanic.

The car has jumped time or the vanos has failed. Im removing the cams and seeing if I need to replace the chain or the vanos and most likely the cam cradles too. Can I just remove the cams and worry about the crappy crank pin later? Im probably going to have to sand it down to make it fit.

Yep this tool is to put the car in timing since the n54 has no markings i would rotate the motor clockwise until the pin fits you must be really close i doubt it jumped much. Make sure the pin is in and you can realight the rest later but you need a reference aka the pin in the crank at TDC to alight the rest of the top.

After you have the pin make your own markings and take pics then reuse the tool to time the engine you shouldn't be far off.

after installing everything rotate clockwise by hand to make sure nothing hits. Again take my advice as advice idk your codes or reason to take the engine apart.

It is hard to say for sure what's causing it in your particular case. But if your camshafts still have metal compression rings that eat into bearing ledges, it seems quite possible.
