Since we get "sapphire black or jet black" questions a lot, I tried to take some photos that show that (1) sapphire black looks very black from far away, basically the same as jet black, and (2) in bright sunlight, you can see the metallic flakes in sapphire black.
I took some photos from close and from far, trying to show how much you can see the metallic flakes. Hopefully, this will answer some of the questions.

I just watched really carefully, reset the trip odometer at 1672 to make them even out at 2007 335. Thanks for the compliments. Click my signature, more pictures in there if you would like to see more.

Cars parked right near each other (at our DC-area Fall Meet 2007), photos taken seconds apart, exposure is the same, light and white balance is the same, yadda yadda.

Our cameras don't know that we are photographing a black car. All they know is that there isn't much light. So they compensate by allowing in more light and the black loses some of its blackness. The last photo in post #124 is a good example. An analgous thing happens when we photograph white cars. Our cameras don't understand that. All they know is that there is lots of light. So they compensate by allowing in less light and the white loses its brilliance. How many times have you seen photographs of people in the snow and the snow looks gray? This is why. Most cameras today understand that the object in the middle of the frame is what we are interested in so they don't compensate as much. If your camera has manual settings or "exposure compensation", you can deal with this problem by intentionally underexposing black objects and overexposing white objects. Hope this helps. |

Thanks for the compliments!
I think that those of us that have black cars belong to a special club. We live by the motto: "It's a lot of work to keep clean, but when it's clean, there's nothing like it". We didn't make the practical or safe choice (like I've done in the past), we "went for it", which is consistent with why we bought a BMW in the first place. A silver Camry or Accord is much more practical (my wife has a silver Camry and I've had silver Accords and TLs). It sure feels good to "be back home" with BMW and BMW enthusiasts. |
