BMWs official oil change interval

....is 2 yr./14k, right? I've always been a low mileage customer, so it's kind of confusing since they never reset the computer. Isn't it that if you're not within 80% of the expiration or something, it cannot be reset, and also with oil, they usually don't reset it unless you do the microcabin?

Well, whatever the case, I got my oil done at the dealer yesterday, and now the computer says 10/2014 or 14000.

imho 2 years is a long time. This would mean for those who don't hit the mileage, you will not get new oil under free maint or extended maint, right?

The computer says 14000, and 10/2014, which is two years from now. It doesn't matter to me as I'd just get it changed again in 7,500 or 1 yr. at my own expense. But what seems to have changed is the low mileage owners under free mainteance--they will not reach 14k and so they would go 2 years before a change....

For low mileage it should be every year. I got my car in 07/2011. Took my car in this month (3 months past the 07/2012 date my car said). Sometime prior to taking it in, my car's date moved forward another year to 07/2013 for my oil. However, the owner's manual states oil should be changed annually for low mileage cars. So I'm not sure why your car says 2014 and not 2013.

I think BMW will have your records though for service so I doubt they would try to stiff you on your oil change in 10/2013 (assuming you're still under warranty).

I just noticed this 2 year reset as well. Had the dealership do a oil change based on the OBC back in February. I was about to do my own 6 month oil change when I was scrolling through the service list and noticed it says oil due on 2/14! What the heck. They tried getting rid of the "free" annual low mileage change before and got too much push back. Think they are trying to get out of it again but even more deceptively this time.

Of course....(date set properly).

What I wonder is what drives the reset/maintenance interval, is the the software? Just trying to back track in my mind when it would have changed. Because my last 2 BMW dealership oil changes did not have a reset, this being the third. Again, I thought I heard that if you're not within 80% of the expiration, you can't reset it or something like that.

Most of us are gonna change the oil sooner than 14k or 2 years....just saying it's odd for BMW to take a position that the oil is now good for 2 years, when it used to be 1.

I just did my oil change today. Computer still said I had 9000kms left but I thought I'll change the oil since I bought the car used and I was reaching 5000kms on it. Problem was when I reset the oil reminder it went to 40,000kms for my next oil change and 10/2014.
40,000kms!?!? That's gotta be wrong.
I also got this weird message on the display when I held down the odometer reset button to get into the service info menu, but I think that was because I had my hood still open.

I just changed the oil and the first year oil change or the miles (only 5000) wasn't due until Jan 2013. I reset the oil reminder and now it states Nov 2014 or 13000, miles is this correct with 2 years?

As the Warranty/Service manual clearly states, oil should be changed at least annually. Other markets (having better quality fuels) have a two year interval but for some reason, the programming of our US OBCs has not been corrected to reflect the one year OCI.

I got my free oil change on the 1 year mark. I was at 8k ish miles. I guess it was a good thing I didn't have to wait till the typical 15k on the CBS/OBC. Regardless I'll try to get another oil change in another 7.5-8k whether or not the OBC says so, or if i'm lucky it'll happen during the annual year check up again.

So I have a diesel tractor. The OCI is every 100 hours of engine run-time. The service manual says nothing about a requirement for annual oil change in lieu of the 100-hour OCI. There have been a few times where I've not run the tractor over 100 hours and the oil in the negine is over 2 years old. No problems.

Just sayin'.

Isn't the interval 15,000 miles or 12 months? So it seems there might not be much luck in getting it changed at the specified interval...

Yeah it is. But last time after 12 months my OBC already indicated I was due for an oil change (I guess it counted down quickly from 15k) when I only drove around for about 8k miles and it ALSO so happens it was the 12th month, basically the yearly annual oil change they do for you. So both my OBC and one year happened at the same time and it was only after 8k miles of driving. So I got mine changed at 8k instead of the typical 15k other people get notified at. Weird, but yeah lol.

After driving the car a few times after the oil reset, the date has changed to Nov 2013 or 12k+, or maybe it was the 150mph run I took her on today made it change!
