2008 335i Rolled into a Ditch :(

Hello,

I rolled my 2008 335i into a ditch, we are ok, car is a write off. We landed on the roof, we shut everything off as quickly as we could. The car being upside down, will that damage the engine? I suspect it probably does, but if anyone knows for sure that would be of great help!

Thanks,

Marc

It will leak oil past the rings into the combustion chambers. Will smoke like hell for a while the next time you start it due to the oil burning off. Do an oil change and visual inspection, then start it up.

Good to hear that you're fine, it must have been scary. I wouldn't worry about it if it's totaled, it's not like you'll fire it up and take it to a body shop.

If the car is totaled why does it matter? But glad you are safe.

You should definitely take the spark plugs out before you try to turn it over. There will be oil trapped on top of the pistons that needs to have somewhere to go when you turn the engine over. Other than that your engine should be fine.

this.

I've started many a rolled over vehicle on the trail. The cylinders will be full of oil. pull the plugs and bump the starter. Make sure you cover the head with a towel unless you want a motor oil shower.

everything else will have also likely leaked fluid out the vents. diffs, transmissions, power steering pumps etc.
check everything for fluid before you fire it.

Never once have I seen Jason Statham or Tom Cruise pull the plugs after rolling their car and it always starts fine.
