Steering Lock Faulty (Red) Error Code A116

Hi Guys,

I had the common 'Steering Lock Faulty' (Red) with a steering and padlock sign come up on the dash a few years ago. It also mentioned

'Electronic steering lock is not disabled one engine has been switched off. Engine can not be restarted'

However the engine could still be restarted, at the time I fortunately had a friend working at the local BMW dealership or reset/reflashed the CAS module. The car has been perfect since up until a few days ago when the error messege came back. The car started for the first few days at which point I thought I would leave it till the weekend. Unfortunately come this morning the car would not start! It is now sat on my drive

I have read up on a few forums that the best starting point is to reset/reflash/update the CAS module once again. Is there any way I can do this myself... If so what equipment/software do I require.

Any help will be much appreciated

Many Thanks

Aff

Good luck mate... I am having this issue as well mate.

I heard it happens when a battery begins to weaken or has low charge.

I heard new cars don't come with steering lock. The lock itself is the auto tranny, so they removed them altogether...

When you sit in the car and when you insert the key, does that symbol some straight on the dashboard?

My steering lock symbol comes on the minute I unlock and sit in the car.

But my car still starts and drives...

Mate can you code this out for me please?

It happened because of a low battery my car was sitting in the workshop for a long time waiting to get painted

Always silly comments.

I'd like to know how changing the whole steering column, fitting + coding works out cheaper than just flashing the module?

Josh
Ask somebody to read the codes from your car and send it to me.
If its typical steering wheel error, I will flash it for you.
And its defo cheaper than buying a brand new steering column from the stealer.
Not speaking about the junk on fleabay, hit and miss stuff.

No,
I'm not in that area. Call out the local indy to get it done.
Its not DIY. If it was coding, I could have said, go ahead.
A decent indy would charge you £70-90 max.

Okay will give a local indy a call on Tuesday, is A116 a typical steering wheel error? Should flashing resolve the problem.

A friend of mine is a mechanic and he bought his snap on machine over and it threw up A116, cant remember the exact fault description but it did mention steering lock error and something about CAS. Little did I know it was not as easy as trying to clear a code!

Anyone know how much a steering column is to buy from BMW? I am dreading this fault occurring on mine however I would change the column myself to save a few quid.
