What is valve cycle and why are you asking about it in a 29.2+ turbo lag thread?

Dealer claims its the AT....

My SA and I took a drive in my 335 sedan and I tried to show him the lag by
1) slowing down and then trying to foot the gas pedal. There was a 2 second delay before the car lurched forward and shot off.
2) Taking a corner and trying to speed out of it. Same behavior.

However for both my SA says its because the AT is downshifting and the turbo begins to spool only after the downshift. He claims this is normal behavior with AT cars. I told him I did not experience this before but he says I probably missed it.

What do you guys think? How do I argue around this? I thot the AT shifts in milliseconds and hence that shld not really be an issue.

Why didn't you do it in (M)anual mode? In that case the steptronic does not shift at all (given you don't kickdown) but the problem stays the same. It has been established several times here that MT or AT are affected likewise.

Rrrrr every time I hear how this is NORMAL, within the spec, how we just missed it before and shit of that nature, I get sooo mad ... I just want to bitch slap the f'n SA in his two-dimensional mind.

In other words, in that example case, you'll have the same choice as I had (please tick one):

O Yes, I want lag! All shiny and NEW! Give me the update! Now!
O No, I don't wanna start the engine any more and be "happy without any lags"!

Tough choice. Good luck.
I deal with limp modes *daily* just to avoid the update. It's f'n annoying to blow by ppl on the hwy only to have to pull over minutes later to reset the limp. Figure anything's better than lag 24/7 though Dealer won't even investigate until they update first. It's not all rosy for us in pre-lag land either, unfortunately.

Btw. what happened w/that member who had the meeting w/the attorneys? Haven't read an update -- are you being told to keep things confidential at this point?

One of these days you will end up stuck in the middle of nowhere with the HPFP failed and a tow truck 5 hours away.

You would be better off getting the update and payment reimbursement until the issue is resolved.

Shop your local dealerships to find one that will promise to replace the parts without upgrading the software. After that many limp modes, you're almost certain to have wastegate defects, and there IS a service bulletin instructing technicians to replace them if they are bad. Unfortunately, the bulletin also tells them to upgrade the software. There is reason to suspect that the new replacement wastegates can handle the old software, so if you can convince a technician to get you a new HPFP and actuators without upgrading, then you will have the best of both worlds. Good luck with that.

Either way, you will end up in a sticky situation with regard to your warranty. If they run diagnostics and find several ignored limp modes, they could void your warranty for not notifying them and/or refusing required service.

In my opinion, there is no longer a cover-up, so we can stop speculating wildly about that. I've received sufficient evidence, both personally and via PM from other members, that BMW has finally acknowledged the issue and is working to resolve it. It's left to the reader to decide if they knew it all along and were hiding things from us (I have strong reason to believe that someone up the chain knew the whole time), but there is nothing we can do about that now, even if true. My main concern now is if they will take care of the issue in a timely fashion, and secondarily if they will take steps to make amends with those of us who had to suffer through it while getting the run-around for several months. If they fail to deliver on either of those counts, then it won't be a matter of if a class action goes through, it will be a matter of when. Just my $.02 for the day.

P.S. Does anyone know if E60 N54 cars (535i) have an equivalent to 29.2?

The valves (wastegates) cycle is the cause of the lag...

There isn't much of a coverup, just ignorance and indifference. I would be surprised if BMW is in fact working on a fix considering they told me in no uncertain words that the new behavior is normal and within spec. Here's for hoping, though.

Brought my 335xi coupe in today for the 25k service. My HPFP failed in April, after about 5k (3 weeks after getting the car). They did a software update as well to v29.2. Noticed the turbo lag immediately. I complained to them and they told me that the car was driving to spec.

I complained again today after reading these posts and asked them to update me to v31. They said they would take care of then. Then I got a call to tell me that when they hooked my car up to the diagnostic, it registered a soft fault, and they have to replace the HPFP again! They also told me they would not upgrate to v31 as there is no fault that shows up for that.

I called BMW Canada and explained my concerns in detail to them. They told me they will contact the dealership and try to get them to install v31 for me, but they had never had a complaint about turbo lag before. They also told me they couldn't make any promises.

As I understand, there are six or so key customer complaints that if mentioned should permit your dealer to update you to v.31 with approval of BMW. More informed folks here may know what all six are; I know one of them is to mention that not all of the Sirius radio staions display on the I-Drive (I had this problem); this, of course, assumes you have the Sirius radio and I-Drive options.

From everything I read, Progman update will automatically update ALL modules with out-of-date firmware. (Note firmware for every module does not change in each Progman version so many modules will already be up to date.)

Update: Here is a quote from a BMW Bulletin: "Note that Progman will automatically reprogram all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software."

I called BMW Canada and they called the dealership and convinced them to upgrade me to v31. I get the car back on Monday or Tuesday. We'll see how it drives.

I wish any major car magazine would testdrive a newer 335
to see the difference towards the "real" 335 of 2007.
This issue must grow bigger. Just my thoughts.
