I went to get my inspection sticker today and the guy told me I can't have my rear lic. plate frame (new law). He took it off and charged me $3...WTF
He also did the same to others before me. Is this really a new law? If not..I'm gonna report him

No it's legit and have been for couple of years but it seems this year most places are more strict. The reason is you can't obstruct the "The Spirit of America" or "Massachusetts."

It also depends where you go and the best thing to do is to remove it before going in for the inspection. The below is from http://www.mass.gov/rmv/faq/inspection.htm#11

I was told my vehicle failed because the dealer license plate frame obstructs the logo "The Spirit of America" or "Massachusetts."
Regulations require that all letters, numbers, stickers, and symbols must be clearly visible on the number plate. A number plate frame that obstructs any part of the plate is illegal, and you could be fined for having an obstructed plate.

It has been the law for ages and they are just enforcing it more now. Just like the law with the front plate and tint.

Someone challenged the law in the past in a different state and it was found to be a violation of free speech if your plate only covers that stupid slogan.

Probably not, but we'll see come October, if I still live here. I get it inspected at the BMW dealership so maybe they're less strict about stuff like this that is completely ridiculous and irrelevant for safety.

If I get asked by a cop, I say "I just had some work done on the bumper, and I haven't re-drilled the holes yet. Plate's in the trunk, and i'm taking care of it this weekend."

In 15 years of driving, I've never gotten a ticket for it.

couldn't even get a NH sticker on my 330 because my front plate was off(in trunk).
Garage would not inspect my car.

I think the law basically says you can't block any information on the plate - including the word "Massachusetts" and the lame ass slogan on the bottom of the plate.
