first, thanks for the video! I was hoping to see you do the fill with temperature etc. which brings me to my question.

is there any reason for me to not use Carly transmission temp parameter to monitor for the purpose of filling the fluid? plan to do tomorrow.

I have ISTAD and tool32 at my disposal as well.

my concern is how to properly fill the trans. only doing filter change.

If Carly can pull your transmission temp, then go for it. Make sure it is the transmission fluid temperature. Not coolant or engine oil or anything like that.

People use the Harbour freight IR beam device. Point it at pan not aluminum body of trans if you do this.

This is a good way too. I used my Schwaben scan tool. It pulls the Transmission Fluid Temp

The latest thought is to fill with what you had dumped. A few people had experienced filling less than what had come out. Seems like factory slightly overfills.

School of thought there being that they fill trans only and account for this extra to distribute into the cooler lines and cooler volume itself.

Yes. You need a schwaben tool, or Rheingold.

That is how it was done in the TDI world. Drain, measure, match and fill! The easiest thing with the DSG was the filter is on the top like our oil filter... After you drain you can fill it from the top! It has even got to a point where they just say just put 4.75 L or Q (I don't remember) and call it a day! That was how I did mine some even said 5was fine it was just a tad over...

All we really need is a few people to measure the amount out and come to an average and fill and forget these transmissions are the same so they have to hold the same amount..

Is there a way to fill other than the fill hole? Like a trans line?????

I will be changing mine soon probably in December when I take my end of year vacation from work

With change of fluid adaptations are needed. Drive lightly for 500mi after the adaptations reset.

so let's just say I needed more zf fluid, and may not be able to find any locally. my only option would be to order from the East coast or, can I get some from BMW? is it the same? I used the zf that comes in the kit from FCP.

CTSC is in Cali. ZF lifeguard 6 is also readily available at dealer or online.

I messaged ctsc hoping to get a response and to pick up. I work tomorrow, so I may go to dealer but if it has the zf, I'll probably grab a couple there.

Red line will say D6 ATF but why bother mixing ATF?

Pan drop will get most of the fluid. ZF expects 200k miles or more with just a pan drop every 45-60k miles.
335d Transmission is BMW GA6HP26Z and it holds 20 liters of BMW ATF-2 or ZF 6. When replacing the pan & filter how many liters will actually come out? I’m guessing 6 or 7? Please help doing the service ASAP.

The kit comes with 6L and that's all you need unless you're dropping the valve body to do the adapter and sleeves as well, then you need 7-8L?

Where did you get that 20 L total quantity? I had read that a dry transmission was more like 9.5L needed. I have no clue how much fluid is in our torque converters though. There is also the to and return lines to the cooler up front. I have considered doing a complete replacement by running the car with these cooler lines disconnected. Idea is to let car push old fluid out in the "to cooler" line and let it suck clean/new fluid from "return from cooler" line.

Please don't run with this as it is only a notional thought and needs to be scrutinized.

NON BMW: Don't read if you don't care.
I did use this technique on my Dodge truck and it worked great. I had ~31L of fluid to dispose of when I was finished with that job. At least it was ATF+4 instead of Lifeguard 6 ($6 per quart vs $20 per liter). I upgraded trans pan to aluminum one with about 4 more quarts of capacity AND a nice drain plug. Dodges don't come with a drain plug.

Thanks, robnitro. Reading a bit closer, it’s 9.4L +a bit more for the external cooler. They give 0.5 to 1.5L for the cooler. My bet is the 335d external cooler is on the low end of 0.5L capacity.

I was looking at a service manual and the total amount with the torque converter it should be more like 20L.

Enclosure 11 to SI 24 05 96 (143), edition 02/2019

Note:
The automatic transmissions have a life-time oil filling. These transmissions require no oil change for their entire service life.

The approved lifetime fluid must be used after repair work on the gearbox or transmission oil cooler.
Caution!
The lifetime oil must not be mixed with or replaced by other types of automatic transmission fluid as this will cause transmission failure.

Lifetime oil:

Trade name BMW part number Container size
Shell M-1375.4 83 22 0 142 516 20 litres
